LESSON PLAN

FA1_UNIT 1: WHAT’S THIS?


Lesson one: Words
Vocab:
1. Lead-in
- Introduce the topic by asking students the following questions:
“What have you got on their pencil case?”
“What have you got on their table?”
- Expected answers: pen, ruler, pencil, book…
 The topic of the lesson is school things.
2. Presentation
Words: pen, rubber, pencil, ruler, book
- The teacher shows the flashcard and asks students “what’s this?”.
- Students give answers: pen, rubber, pencil, ruler, book.
- The teacher checks and corrects students’ pronunciation.
3. Practice
3.1. Controlled activities
- Listen and point: The teacher plays the audio, and students listen and
point to the word on the book.
- Listen and repeat: The teacher plays the audio again; students repeat
following the audio speed.
3.2. Guided activities
3.2.1. The name of the game: Give me things.
Instructions:
- Divide the class into two teams.
- Call each pair to the board in turn.
- The teacher says the word.
- Students try to run fast and bring exact things to the teacher.
- The person who is faster and gives the right things is the winner and
gets points.
Check students’ understanding of the game by ICQs.
3.2.2. The name of the game: My pencil case
Instructions:
- The teacher shows the objectives from a box.
- Whole class names them.
Story:
1. Pre-teach
1.1. Personal experience
- Ask pupils some questions related to the context of the story.
 + Do you use to take the others’ school things, like your sister’s
or brother’s pen?
 + Do you use school things as toys?
1.2. Prediction
- Name of story: What’s this?
- Analyze the pictures:
 Ask students about the number of characters in the picture.
 Introduce the name of the characters.
 Ask students about the things in the pictures (pen, pencil, ruler,
rubber, book)
 What happened?
- Play the video.
2. Teach
- Listen and follow the story.
- Listen and repeat sentence by sentence.
- Role-play
3. Post teach
- Check students’ understanding
- Further activity:
 Show the scripts of the story in which the new words are moved.
 Students fill out the correct words.
- Discussion:
 Should you take the others’ school things without asking?

Lesson two: Grammar


1. Lead-in:
- From the story above  mark and point out the grammar focus
How to question  we say: “what’s this?”
How to answer  we say: “It’s __.”
2. Presentation:
2.1. Present the meaning.
2.2. Form the structure:
What’s this? = what is this?
It’s___ = It is___
3. Practice
3.1. Controlled Activity:
Act1: Teacher shows class the set of flashcard points and asks:
 What’s this?
 It’s a___.
Teacher divides class into two groups. One group asks,
“what’s this?”, the other group answers “it’s a__.” And take
turn.
Act2: Do exercise 3
3.2. Guided activity:
Act1: Play game: musical chairs
 Teacher sets up chairs in a circle, then take out of two chairs.
 Ask students walk around the chairs when the music starts and
sit down on one chair when the music stops.
 Who has no chairs will asks and answers about school things.
Act2: Long and short game
 Teacher writes both long and short forms of the question
and the answer on board.
 While writing, teacher says the short form and students
say the long, and vice versa.
Act3: Ask and answer in a pair
+ Each pair stands up, points to the card on the board, asks and
answers following the structure pattern.
Lesson three Song
1. At the beginning of the lesson  review vocab of the previous lesson
2. Pre-teach
- Personal experience:
Ask students: “Can you help me open/close the door/your book/ your
bag…?”
- Predict:
Pictures: ask pupils to describe the pictures.
3. Teach
3.1. Vocab
- The teacher shows the flashcard and read the word.
- Students repeat and the teacher checks their pronunciation.
- Students listen to the audio and point to the words.
- Students listen to the audio and repeat following the audio speed.
- Practice: the teacher shows the cards, and students give the name
3.2. Song
- Listen to the song (twice).
- Read sentence by sentence and do the actions simultaneously.
- Sing sentence by sentence
- Perform  whole class + each group.
4. Post teach
Discuss the lyrics
Lesson four Phonics
1. Lead-in
- Check students’ prior knowledge
List the words containing the target sounds and ask students to sound
Apple, ants, arm, avocado
Bird, bye, bike, ball
Cat, candy, cup
Dog, desk, drink, drug, deep
2. Presentation
2.1. Present the target sound
2.2. Guide students to work the sound and the model words
3. Practice
3.1. Controlled activity
- Listen and point: students listen to the audio and point to the words.
- Listen and repeat: students listen to the audio and repeat the sound
3.2. Guided activity
3.2.1. Name of the game: Sounding
Instructions:
- Divide class into two team
- The teacher shows the objectives containing the target sound on ppt.
- Students name and sound the name of these objectives as fast as
possible.
- Give points to the team that sounds correctly.
3.2.2. Name of the game: Words flying
Instructions:
- Divide class into two team
- The teacher shows quick words containing the target sound on ppt.
- Students try to recognize and sound the words as fast as possible.
- Give points to the team that sounds correctly.
4. Listen and chant
4.1. Teach
- Listen and follow the chant
- Read sentence by sentence
- Chant sentence by sentence
4.2. Post teach
- Perform the chant and do exercise 3 +4

SKILLS TIME!
Lesson five
Reading
1. Pre-teach
1.1. Personal experience: tell me what school things you have around
you!
 Mind-map: key word = school things
- Revise the structure using to point things: This is___
1.2. Prediction
- From the picture: Q&A
 Who is this?
 What is this?
 What is she doing?

2. Teach
- Listen and follow the text.
- Listen and repeat the text (twice).
- Explain new words
- Practice reading:
Activity 1: one by one reads the sentences in order
Activity 2: Fill in the gab
Students close their book and try to fill the key words in the text
showed on board.

3. Post teach
- Check students’ understanding by doing exercise 3
- Further activity: Introduce what school things you have on your bag!
In turn, students go on board and introduce things in their bags to the
others.
Lesson 6
Listening
1. Pre-teach
- Explain the question/task.
- Prediction: through the pictures, revising all the related vocabs.
2. Teach
- Listen for context
 Students identify the conversation: where it is taking place; how
many people are talking…
- Listen and do
- Listen and check
- Listen and repeat
3. Post teach
- Listen and complete the script.

Speaking
1. Lead-in
- Revise structures: What’s this? , It’s__.
2. Practice
2.1. Controlled activity
- The teacher shows the objectives
- In group, students repeat the structures, ask and answer.
2.2. Guided activity
- The teach shows the objectives and asks the question.
- In turn, each student answers the question.
2.3. Free activity
- In pair, students make an interview, ask and answer following the
practice 2 on their book.
- After that performing in front of whole class.
Writing
1. Teach
- Write vocabs and structure:
The teacher points to the card stuck on the board.
Students write the sentence on their paper.
2. Practice
- Controlled activity: do exercise 3
- Guided activity:
 Students write down all their school things following the pattern
structure.
 Students submit their work to the teacher and the teacher gives a
mark.
