Environment Event

The document provides training on classifying and managing environmental events according to the EvE standard. It outlines the objectives of classifying events using the standard's 5 levels and explaining how and why events should be declared. The standard aims to improve feedback and reduce environmental accidents by analyzing past events and precursor signs. Sites must classify events according to their environmental impact, nonconformities, and media attention to properly manage them.

Training objectives

To know how to classify the environmental

events according to the 5 levels of the EvE
standard
To be able to declare an event in the Events

To know the requirements of the Saint-
Gobain Group regarding the management of
environmental events

Implementation terms

Scope:
All Saint-Gobain industrial sites, mines and quarries

Sites belonging to Saint-Gobain that may still have

environmental events although they are no longer in
operation (e.g. redundant landfills, etc.)

Distribution sites with ISO 14001 certifications or

environmental event management systems

Deployment over 3 years of the standard on the

whole scope.

5
Implementation terms

Sectors and Activities determines on which scope

they start the deployment of the standard.
At the minimum, starting January 1st 2013, this scope
should contain ISO 14001 & concerned sites.
These ISO 14001 & concerned sites would have to
record in GAIA Events, at the minimum:
major and significant accidents from 2013
moderate accidents from 2014

Why managing environmental

What is at stake in EHS:

Societal acceptability / Group image;

Financial impact;

Legal and statutory obligations;

Legal risk for the employees and the company.

The cost of non-considering EHS : a few memorable

11
Why managing environmental
events?
Environmental accidents can happen anywhere, at anytime, and
cause important damage.

Often, they are preceded by precursor signs (near-accidents,

dangerous acts and conditions).

By working from the initial stages on the precursor signs and by

analyzing the accidents that already happened, it is possible to
avoid them.

The EvE standard gives an approach to follow in order to reach

that result.

12
Objectives of the EvE standard
Environmental
accidents
Feedback

Near-accidents
Where did our approach fail?
Dangerous acts, What is missing in our approach?
Dangerous conditions

Managing environmental events in order to:

improve the feedback (to draw a lesson from the past
events in order to avoid their reproduction)
to reduce the bottom of the iceberg
and so reach the zero environmental accident

➔ Improving Saint-Gobain’s environmental

performance

13
Objectives of the EvE standard

Existence of standards specific to some BU:

harmonization at the Group level

2011:
IM
2010:
Verallia 2012:
2008: Group
Gyproc

14
Objectives of the EvE standard

To answer the requirements:

of the ISO 14001 norm (events &
emergency situations management)
with the objective of Saint-Gobain to
certify 90 % of the concerned sites
of Saint-Gobain EHS frame of reference
(implementation of a system of
continuous improvement)
of transparency of the Global
Reporting Initiative in the sustainable
development report

The 5 levels of environmental
events
Analogy with security:

17
The drum example

Level 5: Dangerous acts, dangerous

conditions

The drum containing a polluting product is on a pallet near a drain.

There is a risk of soil or water pollution in case of leak or release. The
drum should be placed on a retention far away from the drain.

18
The drum example

Level 4: Environmental near-accident

The drum containing a polluting product falls from its retention, but
hopefully without leak or release.

19
The drum example

Level 3: Moderate environmental accident

The drum containing a polluting product falls from its retention. The
release is limited to the site activity areas and requires only the
implementation of internal means of cleaning.

20
The drum example

Level 2: Significant environmental accident

The drum containing a polluting product falls from its retention and
causes a release which remains within the site activity areas, but
requires the intervention of an external company for the cleaning
(external means).

21
The drum example

Level 1: Major environmental accident

The drum containing a polluting product falls from its retention and
causes a release outside the site activity areas, impacting the local
river. There is a media impact and an intervention of the authorities
(appearance before a court).

First, one has to look if the EvE really caused an environmental impact or if it
is about an EvE that may have caused one.
There was an environmental impact if:
➢ the EvE caused a negative modification of the environment

the normal operations of the site and/or respecting the limits authorized by
the site’s permits.

Event advanced severity

The advanced assessment of the event severity takes

into account:
the scale of the environmental event
Parameter Scale
0 N=0
1 0 < N ≤ 500
Number (N) of persons exposed to the pollution
2 500 < N ≤ 5000
3 N > 5000
0 S=0
1 S ≤ 0,1
Surface (S) of soil or groundwater impacted (in ha)*
2 0,1 < S ≤ 2
3 S>2
0 L=0
1 L ≤ 0,1
Length (L) of embankment or waterway impacted (in km)
2 0,1 < L ≤ 2
3 L>2

unknown, the score of 3 is taken.
