5 Shopping and Services
Shopping is a necessity – when we buy food and other basic things we need for life. For
example, bread or rolls, milk, butter, tea, salami, ham, cheese, sugar, oil, meat, fruit,
vegetables…For food, we go shopping every day to local shops, but we also like going
shopping to big supermarkets or shopping centres where the choice is bigger and sometimes it
is also cheaper.
Shopping is a hobby – when we go to the shops for pleasure. Many times, we just do
window shopping when we haven´t got enough money. Or we buy things we do not need and
we become shopaholics. Women usually like shopping for clothes and accessories, shoes,
handbags, cosmetics, jewellery...; men like shopping for technologies, electronics and
accessories, cars, tools, machines, technical equipment...
Types of shops:
Local (corner/small) shops – small shops where you can buy almost everything
Specialized shops – baker’s, butcher’s, clothes shops, florist’s, grocer’s, greengrocer’s,
ironmonger’s, jewellery, newsagent’s, shoe shop, bookshop, furniture shop, delicatessen,
chemist’s, boutique...
Department stores – with departments of specialized shops in one building
Supermarkets – you can buy there mostly food
Shopping centres – a lot of shops at one place, there are also additional services
Street markets – there you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables and homemade products. They
are usually more expensive than in shops but of better quality
- people are part of a consumer society and they spend their free time in shops
- there are a lot of people, it´s noisy there
- there are long queues
- doing shopping takes a long time
- you often buy what you don’t need
