1. PROCESSIONAL HYMN: A&M 432 – Once in Royal David’s City

1. ONCE in royal David’s City
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for His bed:
Mary was that Mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.

2. He came down to earth from heaven

Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable
And his cradle was a stall;
With the poor and mean and lowly
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

3. And through all his wondrous Childless

He would honour and obey;
Love and watch the lowly Maiden,
In Whose gentle arms he lay
Christian Children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he

4. For he is our Childhood pattern

Day by day like us he grew
He was little, weak and helpless
Tears and smiles like us he knew
And he feeleth for our sadness
And he shareth in our gladness

5. And our eyes at last shall see him

Through his own redeeming love
For that child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above
And he leads his children on
To the place where he is gone

6. Not in that poor lowly stable

With the oxen standing by
We shall see him but in heaven
Set at God’s right hand on high
Where like stars his children crowned
All in white shall wait around. AMEN.

2. CALL TO WORSHIP.

3. INTRODUCTORY CAROL: IN DULCI JUBILO Old German Carol arr. R.L Pearsll (1795 - 1856)

1. In dulci jubilo In sweet jubilation,

Let us our homage shew;
Our heart’s joy reclineth
In praesepio In a manger
And like a bright star shineth
Matris in gremio, in the Mother’s lap
Alpha es et O!, Thou art Alpha & Omega!

2. O Jesu parvule! O tiny Jesus

I yearn for thee alway!
Hear me, I beseech thee
O puer Optime O best of boys
My prayer let it reach thee
O princeps Gloriae. Prince of glory.
Trahe me post te! Draw me unto thee!
3. O patris Caritas! O father’s caring!
O Nati lenitas! O newborn mildness!
Deeply were we stained
Per nostra crimina by our crimes
For thou hast for us gained
Coelorum gaudia heavenly Joy
O that we were there!

4. Ubi sunt gaudia, where be joys

If that they be not there?
There are Angels singing
Nova cantina new songs
There the bells are ringing
In Regis curia: at the king’s court
O that we were there!

4. 1ST LESSON: “GOD’S OWN CREATION FOR ITS PURPOSE” – GEN 2:1-7
5. HYMN: A&M 64 – ANGELS FROM THE REALMS OF GLORY

Ye who sang creation’s story,
Now proclaim Messiah’s birth;

Chorus: Come and worship,

2. Shepherds, in the field abiding,

Watching o’er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant Light
Chorus

3. Sage, leaves your contemplations;

Brighter visions beam afar,
Seek the great desire of nations;
Ye have seen his natal star:
Chorus
4. Saints before the alter bending,
Watching longing hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In his temple shall appear:
Chorus

5. Though an infant now we view him,

He shall fill his Father’s throne,
Gather all the nations to him;
Every knee shall then bow down;
Chorus
AMEN.

Come thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free
From our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth Thou art,
Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart.

9. HYMN: A&M 67 – IN THE BLEAK MID WINTER
1. In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter Long ago.

2. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him

Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

3. Enough for Him, whom cherubim

Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk,
And a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel Which adore.

4. Angels and archangels

May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air –
But only His mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss.

5. What can I give Him, Poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man
I would do my part;
Yet what I can, I give Him -
Give my heart.

It is the night of the dear saviour’s birth;
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;

Chorus
Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices!
O night divine! O night when Christ was born.
O night, divine! O night, O night divine.

2. Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming;

With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand:
So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land,
The king of Kings lay thus in lowly manger,
In all our trials born to be our friend;
He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger!
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Your King before him bend!
Chorus

3. Truly He taught us to love one another;

His law is love and His gospel is peace;
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother,
And in his all oppressions shall cease,
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful Chorus raise we;
Let all within us praise his Holy name!
Christ is the Lord, then ever! ever praise we!
His pow’r and glory, evermore proclaim!
His pow’r and glory, evermore proclaim!

Are met in thee tonight.

2. For Christ is born of Mary;

While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wond'ring love.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth;

3. How silently, how silently,

The wondrous gift is giv'n!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of his heav'n.
No ear may hear his coming;
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him, still
The dear Christ enters in.

4. holy child of Bethlehem,

Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell:
