Suicide and suicidal behavior are public health crisis that needs immediate attention to
prevent the rapidly rising cases in the United States. As a public health worker, I have researched
the factors that lead to suicide and suicidal behavior, and the most affected group of people.
However, suicide entails engaging in actions that can lead to intentional death, while suicidal
behavior is an attempt, but one does not die. There is a strong link between mental health
disorders and suicide since mental health problems increase suicidal rates. Thus, suicide
prevention policies and organizations have been put in place to reduce the number of suicide
cases (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 2019). Public health workers also play a
Furthermore previous research shows that suicide is among the leading causes of death
among older adults and younger children aged 10 and above (Facts about suicide, 2022).
However, there is a difference in suicide rates among these groups; for instance, the suicide rate
among people aged 25 and above is higher than that of people aged 35 and above. In recent
years, statistics show that over 1 million people have engaged in suicidal behavior (Suicide data
and statistics, 2022). Suicide patterns have been increasing over the last years, but prevention
strategies have been embraced, and a decline has been shown. Moreover, everyone is at risk;
therefore, a comprehensive public health approach has been called for. Suicide is impulsive
among children and is caused by significant mental health problems due to depression and
anxiety.
Moreover, child abuse greatly impacts a child's mental health, leading to suicidal
behavior. Teen children who engage in substance abuse also are at a higher risk of suicidal

attempts. In addition, stressful social life experiences such as family conflict, loss of loved ones,
and problems with other peers in school also contribute to suicide attempts. Suicide and suicidal
behaviors are also prevalent among younger and older adults. This is due to financial issues, a
history of mental health problems such as depression, substance use disorder, and harsh life
experiences. There are many health illnesses related with late-life age such as diabetes which
Suicide as a leading cause of death requires a comprehensive national and public health
approach. Considering that suicide affects almost all ages, that is, between 10 and 65,
intervention strategies are essential. Suicide attempts cause chronic health complications
affecting a person's emotional and physical well-being. Thus, protective policies that support
people at risk of suicide are effective in communities through public health workers. Everyone
has a role to play in preventing suicide. Creating a protective and comfortable environment
encompasses everyone in a particular community (Facts about suicide, 2022). People with
substance use disorders need to seek help from therapists to avoid suicidal thoughts while service
providers enhance access to public health services. Suicide prevention policies and intervention
programs focus on engaging all community members despite their age to ensure equality in
health services. Moreover, public health workers work with families and communities to support
