Dear Maryanne,
It was great meeting your grandmother last month. I have to tale to someone for
my history report, and I want to talk to your grandmother. She is so interesting.
She told me about growing up with 5 brothers and 4 sisters. She also told me about
her first job selling women’s shoes. Stores were really different then! Can you ask
her if she can help me with my history report? Thank you for your help, I want to
write a really good report.

Dear Tim,
It is so exciting to work with you on the geography project. I am glad that we have
chosen the town’s old church to present our “Favorite Place in Town”. Shall we
go there this Saturday morning to take some pictures of the building? I can bring
my camera. After that we can go back to my house to prepare for our presentation.
My grandmother said she can tell us something about the history of the church.
Shall we meet at 8 a.m? We can ride our bicycles there together.
Sincerely,
Brian

Read about how to be a good dog owner. Then answer questions 20 to 22.
22. Why should you have a toy available for your dog?
Read the story about Tony and his neighbors. Then answer questions 23 to 26.
Tony lived on a small street. He loved everything about his neighborhood except
his two noisy friends who lived next door. Janet, who lived in the house on the
left, practiced Zumba every evening. Manny lived in the house on the right, and
liked to play his drums whenever he had free time.
Because of his noisy neighbors, Tony had almost no quiet time for one of his
favorite activities, reading. One day, Tony decided that he couldn’t take it
anymore. He came up with a brilliant idea and went to see Janet. “I will give you
my comics collection if you stop your Zumba class” he said. “Oh, okay!” she said.
Then he went to Manny’s house and asked him to stop playing his drums. He
offered Manny his stamp collection in exchange. “Deal!” said Manny.
Later that night, Tony was very surprised to hear Zumba music and drums. “I
thought you both had agreed to stop” Tony said. “We did”, Janet said. “That is
Manny who is doing Zumba and I’m playing drums”. Tony was at a loss for words.
What would he do now?
The next day, Janet and Manny came to visit Tony. “We know why you asked us
to stop, and we’re sorry”, said Manny, “so we got you this present”. They handed
him a small box and left smiling. Tony opened the box. There were his comics, his
stamp collection and a pair of fancy earmuffs. Finally, he could enjoy his books in
peace!
Read the story about Ms. Anne’s class. Then answer questions 27 to 30.
Today Ms. Anne was going to try a new class activity – have her students help each
other learn. In the math corner, Sarah presented a math problem “There are five of us
and we have fifty-two strawberries to share, so each of us would help …” “Ten”
answered Tom, “and Max could have two more because he likes strawberries.” The
student started laughing when Max pretended to put a handful of strawberries into his
mouth.
Across the classroom, in the science corner, Mary was explaining to other students
“If you could jump half a meter high on Earth, you could jump two-and-a-half-meter
high on the Moon. It means that you could jump onto the roof of a house there.”
“Agree, Mary”, Toby said, “but is there a house on the Moon?”. Everyone laughed,
and they started to talk about how life would be on the Moon.
The students in the book nook were sitting on pillows and reading “The Fox and the
Crow”. Ms. Anne smiled when she heard Ryan say “Can I hear your voice, dear
Crow? I heard that you have the most amazing voice ever!”. “Don’t fool me, Fox.
You are just after my cheese!”, Chris answered. “I like the way you two speak”, said
Lily, “You make it more exciting.”
Today Ms. Anne’s students learned something new. Learning was easier and more
fun when you worked together.
27. What was the new activity in Ms. Anne’s class today?
29. What did Lily think about Ryan and Chris’s reading?
There are many lakes that are full of salty water. The water is salty because rivers
carry salts from the ocean into the lakes. The Dead Sea is a famous salt sake. In
the past, people thought that nothing can live in the Dead Sea because there are no
fish or large plants in it, but many small plants do live there. The saltiest lake in
the world is Don Juan Pond in Antarctica, which is so salty that there is no ice in
it even in winter.
31. What can live in the Dead Sea?
Venus, the second planet from the Sun earns the title “the Earth’s twin” for some
reasons. Venus is about the same size and density as the Earth, which means the
gravity is similar between there and the Earth. Like the Earth, Venus has days and
nights – although a day in Venus is the equivalent of 243 Earth days. There are sun-
ups and sun- down but because Venus rotates in the opposite direction of planet Earth
s the Venus’s sun rises in the west and sets in the east. There are also clouds and wind
in Venus. The clouds are made of sulphuric acid and the wind exceeds tornado
strength. The atmosphere mainly consists of carbon dioxide. This blanket makes
Venus’ average temperature six times hotter than the hottest spot on the Earth.
33. How is a day in Venus different from a day on the Earth?
A. It is much longer.
B. It is much shorter.
D. It is much colder.
At the foot of the highest range of mountains on Earth- The Himalayas, there used
to be thousands of diverse types of wildlife including various subspecies of tigers.
However, since humas living here have cleared the forests to grow crops for
dozens of years, the habitat of the tigers has been seriously affected. As a result, a
large number of the animal have disappeared. Its number in the region has fallen
sharply in the last 8 decades from 40,000 to as few as 2,000. Saving tigers has
become essential as it means preserving the entire food chain. So far, local
authorities and conservationists have established more than 35 reserves around the
area to protect tigers and other species.
