Ternates are Teas
Ternates are Teas is a lemonade and tea business with the usage of butterfly pea flower as
the main ingredient for making the product, lemonade and/or tea. The product has also a powered
tea form for the convenience of the customers where they can drink it at work, home, or
everywhere. The idea behind this business is to make use of the butterfly pea flower, also called
as Pukinggan or Samsamping in tagalog, which can be found in some parts of Asia, and Philippines
is one of them. This flower is becoming well-known in the country for its combined health benefits
and unique aesthetic value. Blue Ternate (Clitoria ternatea L.) is a potential source of
phytochemicals and hormones with nutritional and helpful benefits. The flower has the power to
heal and offer beneficial enzymes needed by the body that other plants cannot provide. There are
various benefits that can be derived from the flower of Butterfly Pea: It has natural antioxidants,
helps improve blood circulation, helps prevent hair loss and graying. It also cleanses blood,
improves night vision, revitalizes skin and hair (Dizon, 2014).
The business wants to provide new ways of drinking blue pea tea by making new flavors
and recipe for consumers to enjoy. It aims to promote the usage of blue pea flower especially in
Lanao del Sur, where this plant can be seen in some street sides but few folks are knowledgeable
about its health benefits.
Ta’am
Ta’am (Maranao term for flavor) is a business that will commercialize palapa with variety
of new flavors, like palapa with tomatoes to name one. Palapa is a Maranao condiment or
ingredient which is made out of Sakurab (a specie of scallion native in Lanao del Sur), gingers,
chillies, and salt by crushing and mixing them altogether. It serves as a crucial ingredient in some
Maranao delicacies, like Piaparan a manok and Beef randang, but aside from being an ingredient,
Palapa can also be eaten together with rice which serves as an appetizer in a meal.
The idea of the business is to make use of the native scallions and it wants to promote the
local food of the Maranao by commercializing it through which it will bring reputation to the local.
It aims to encourage the people of Lanao to engage and invest more on what they have uniquely
to others, like Palapa, it also motivate Maranaos to engage more in agriculture.
Mamis
Mamis (Maranao term for sweetness) is a business that will commercialize Browa, which
is a Maranao delicacy but with a twist by giving it variation like for example Mango Browa.
“Browa is from Maranao and comes in two varieties. The first is similar to ladyfingers: a cookie
with a crunchy texture. The second has a sponge-like consistency and is more like mammon. Either
way, it’s super good!” according to, The Maya Kitchen. The idea of the business is to create new
flavors of browa for customers to enjoy the new taste. The inspiration behind this business is the
croissants which at early days has only one flavor but as time passes through some bakeries today
make their own twists and turns to create new variation and flavor of croissants.
The business aims to encourage Maranao bakers to think outside the box and get creative
in baking new flavors for new taste but still with the hint of the signature native delicacy to still
preserve the identity of the Maranao delicacy.
