ANGLES Yr 8
Class: year 8
Topic: ANGLES
OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, the student should be able to:
1. Define an angle
3. Construct angles 90⁰, 45⁰, 60⁰, 30⁰, 15⁰, 75⁰ and 120⁰.

Types of Angles
i. Right angle: This is an angle that is equal to 90⁰ or perpendicular to the horizontal. E.g.
Right Angle
ii. Acute angle: This is an angle that is less than 90⁰. E.g.
Acute
iii. Obtuse angle: This is an angle that is greater than 90⁰ but lesser than 180⁰. E.g.
iv. Angle on a straight line: This is an angle on a straight line and it is equal to 180⁰.
E.g.
vi. Angle at a point: This angle is equal to 3600 .It usually forms a complete circle.
E.g.
Angle at a Point
vii. Complementary angle: These are pairs of angles summed up to give 90⁰. E.g.
Supplementary angles: This is another pair of angles which adds up to give 180⁰.

Construction of Angles
A. Construction of angle 90⁰.
(i). Draw a horizontal line AB.
(ii). Mark a point O, along AB.
(iii). With O as centre and any convenient radius, construct a semi-circle on AB at CD.
(iv). With C and D as centres and any convenient radius, cut arcs in turns above AB to
intersect at E.
(v). Join E to O to acquire the required angle.
E.g.
F. Constructing Angle750.
(i). Using the steps stated earlier, construct angle 900 and 600 first.
(ii). Bisect angles 900 and 600 by using the 2 angles as centres in turn.
(iii). Join the bisector to O to get the required angle.
E.g.
1. Define an angle
3. Construct the following angles 90⁰, 45⁰, 60⁰, 30⁰, 15⁰, 75⁰ and 120⁰.
