Farm Side Agro Ltd. by Omar Fahim Khan
Game Changing Superhero
Mr. Faisal Bin Maleque is the managing director of Farm Side Agro Ltd, located in Rajendrapur
in Singair upazila of Manikganj, which is the grandparent's house of Faisal’s. After completing
schools from Wills Flower School of Dhaka, Faisal Bin Maleque studied in Chattered
Accounting (CA). After accomplishing his degree, he established some educational institutions
with his friends where he teaches English medium students. Later on, Faisal Bin Maleque and his
friend Sabbir Hasan Khan who has completed his post-graduation from Eastern University of
UK along with two more friends Fahim Uddin Chowdhury and Al Farooque Ahmed took an
initiative to establish a cow farm on 2017. They started by buying 2 bighas of land at
Rajendrapur and two cows at first for the farm. From ancient time it has been seen that people
who are less prone to proper education usually tend to enter in this type of business. But Mr.
Faisal thought its high time to break the taboo. An example of his Game changing scenario was
within only two years of their business they have had the potential to increase the space of their
land from 2 bighas to 50 bighas and from 2 cows to 100 cows.

To win you have to make a move

Mr. Faisal stated after completing his graduation he started doing teaching along with some
friends then after some years they had managed to save a large sum amount of money which they
planned on investing in this project. Their start-up capital was 80 lac which was raised from 4
shareholders. The whole capital was self-financed. They tried to avoid debt capital as they were
new in this sector and they lacked experience. They started business buying 3 acres of land but
they have leased for more than 25 acres. Starting from only 2 cows we have now been able to
expand our business operations and made it to 100 cows. Beside selling cows we gradually
increased our product portfolio which comprises of milk, meat, ghee, vegetables, qurbani cattle
such as cows, goats, lamb, etc. Moreover, they have developed a 3rd generation Bio Gas Plant
which provides 24-hours bio-gas services from the cow-dung through which more than 25
families near the farm can cook three-time food. They also produce fertilizer from cow dung
which will be in the market soon. Corn silage is another product in their farm which is very
popular among modern farmers. The total area of the farm is under the control of multiple close
circuits (CC) cameras. Also, there is a little hospital within the farm. If any cows become sick,
they are immediately transferred to that hospital and they are being treated by skilled
Veterinarians. There are six cowherds working in the farm who look after the cows, bring fresh
grass from fields, feed them, clean dung and ensure the comfort of the cows. If any conditions
and problems arise about the cows, they report it to the manager of the farm. All of these things
might not have happened if Mr. Faisal was sitting idle. Therefore Mr. Faisal quoted if you have
the potential and chance of grabbing such opportunity, without further thought you should
embrace it if you are dedicated towards something and you should stick toward the plan against
all odds.

If you do not have patience it is not your cup of tea.

Starting the business from scratch and bringing it at this point was not a piece of cake. Mr. Faisal
stated we were encountered with many difficulties and challenges, if we were not patience
enough and dedicated towards our goals, we might have fall out. Dealing with livestock is not
that easy. Initially there were many problems such as diseases and management problems, which
still exists but due to gaining some experience we are gradually overcoming them. As mentioned
earlier all the calves are brought up with such care and affection that each has its own name. we
know it sounds like a at the top of the tree but there is a catch- the commencement suffers from
lack of support from the government. There is a specific regulation from the agricultural industry
that that farmers are sanctioned to free medicines and medical services. When the livestock is
encountered with any disease there are government authorized clinics and centers throughout the
country where people can avail free medicine and medical services for their livestock. But
unfortunately, we can see that the right to get these services only exists in paper. Mr. Faisal
revealed the government took the right initiative, but they are not being performed on the ground
level. The government employed Vets responsible for treating the cows are very unprofessional
they usually don’t come and treat the cows with reasonable price, they charge higher than the
benchmark price set by the livestock department. As a result of this it increases out cost of doing
business which would have been minimized if we were being able to avail our desired services at
low cost. Setting up little hospital within the farm is one of these many reasons. But this is not
our only the only concern. All the fresh produce being harvested in these farms is often sold off
to local wholesalers in the market below the expected price. As their selling price and the price,
the local wholesalers agree to pay have a vast difference. Besides this market is becoming
saturated and large investors are already exploring the market. We have to come up with
measures that is completely out of the box. That’s why we focus more on the quality and
commitments in order to gain competitive advantage. The success of the business also comes at a
cost. Initially, Mr. Faisal spends much of his time thinking how to expand and increase their size
of operations. He spends months outside the home running to gain some expertise. He mentioned
after coming back to the house his 4 years child once didn’t recognize him. So, they have faced a
lot in 3 years of their experience but they were resilient and kept patience to run forward. He
further stated though he was not yet completely been profited but he is getting satisfaction from
what I am doing.

Being an entrepreneur is not a bed of roses: Never stop chasing your dreams
In conclusion, I have asked Mr. Faisal that what will you advice to the young upcoming
entrepreneurs? He replied: if you have enough patience, ability and mentality to overcome from
some certain losses then you should be ready for a big shot to be an entrepreneur and make your
own identity. Moreover, from his experience he advised what young entrepreneur should pursue
which is to keep your commitments. It shows your integrity and personality. Lastly, asking him
How do you define success? He answered Forget success, think of failures.
