6. The visit was on Friday November 22nd at noon, and it lasted about 40 minutes.

ATTRACTION
I was interested to visit this business because I think the textile industry is very interesting
and they have very good products. The owner told me that they do not have a human
resources department because it is a small business, but he will be glad if I can help him to
create and organize one and implement the industrial health and safety manuals and
procedures. I would like to help him because he is a very good friend and I know my
experience and knowledge could be very useful in his business.

PRETEXT
I talked to the owner about my Organizational Communication class, and that we have been
working on a project related to the industrial health and safety, and the working
environment. I told him that I would like to do this project with them, and I will do a
profound analysis about the industrial health and safety measures and procedures they have.
I told the owner that I will ask them many questions. This company has very good
products, that is another reason why I was very interested in doing this project with them.
The owner was very kind and let me visit the factory and the showed me every area and
answered all the questions.

CONTACT METHOD
The owner is a friend. I called him and he was very pleased to help me with this project.

INTERVIEWEE
Because this is a small business, the owner does a lot of things. He is in charge of the
strategic planning, sales and suppliers. He supervises production and is in close contact
with the machine operators. One of his cousins helps him with inventory and row material
control. This business has 30 employees, and he is the one who does the job interviews and
hire all the workers. The owner is also in charge of the industrial health and safety, he
makes decisions and solve the problems related to this area. For the owner health and safety
are very important because he knows it improves productivity and workers feel better
working here. Sometime there are problem related to people, that is why he also pays close
attention to the working environment, but the problems have been easy to solve.

INTERVIEW & CONVERSATION

I was very comfortable during the interview. The owner is a very nice person, and he
answered all my questions. He mentioned that they do not have manuals and procedures
related to the industrial health and safety. They have not had problems related to the safety
of workers, but there have been some problems related with the working environment, but
those problems were easy to solve, and the people involved was satisfied with the solution.
He mentioned that the working environment is very important for him. I asked about it and
he answered that he noticed that people increased their productivity when they feel
comfortable and relaxed. It is very important, because they can continue producing quality
products and minimize wastes. He has a lot of things to do every day, but he trusts his
workers and delegate some activities to them, he has noticed that this has helped him to
reduce his work and the workers felt better. He is always open to talk to the people that
works for him, he knows that they are human beings, and they have personal problems, and
he is willing to help them, I think this is another reason why people like to work in this
factory, and they have a good working environment.

GOALS
1. During this interview I felt very comfortable. I think this was because I already
know the owner and that helped me. I like to talk to people, I feel only a little bit
nervous when I talk with people that is important or my boss.
2. I would like to help the owner with the human resources activities and implement
all that is needed in the industrial health and safety area. The business does not have
this area, and the process related to it.
3. They do not have emergency exits, and all the fire detectors needed in each area of
the factory. They need to buy and place more fire extinguishers in every area of the
factory. They need to do first aids training among their workers and place the
emergency signage.
4. It is very interesting to see how people work inside a factory, and how they do their
activities. The atmosphere in the business feels very nice. I heard people laughing
and working with ease. The business has a good working environment, but there
will be problems anyway, because people have differences.
5. I saw a lot of young people working in the business, and I think this could help
having a good working environment. The owner is a young person, and he is very
nice. He knows how to trat people and knows a lot about his business.

REFLECTION

It was a very good experience. This business has a good working environment, and it is a
Mexican family business. Even though, they do not have an industrial health and safety
area, the owner is aware of it, and he wants to implement it as soon as possible. The owner
only works with some members of his family. This business is a good example of a familiar
company where the work and help each other. He told me that they want me to work with
them and implement the human sources department and its functions.
