1 Scope
This Linde Standard (LS) defines cleanliness requirements, cleaning methods, inspection/verification methods
and acceptance criteria for vacuum-insulated piping and valves, fabricated at Manufacturer’s premises.

2 Abbreviations and definitions

Manufacturer Party responsible for manufacturing of vacuum-insulated piping
Purchaser Linde AG, Engineering Division, resp. party responsible for Construction Management
Table 1: Overview of fluids

Fluid Fluid code Fluid code

Gaseous Liquid
Argon AG AL
Helium HE HE
Hydrogen HG −
Krypton KR KR
Nitrogen GN LN
Oxygen GO LO

3 Scope of Manufacturer
 Preparation of cleaning procedure, based on requirements defined in this LS.
 Surface treatment of piping to achieve required degree of cleanliness.
 Inspection of achieved cleanliness during fabrication, prior to shipment.
 Preservation of piping during storing, transport.

4 General cleanliness requirements

The inner surface of vacuum insulated piping for fluid codes as defined in Table 1 shall meet following
acceptance criteria:
 Organic material such as oil, grease, paint, etc. not ascertainable.
 Cleaning agents including detergents not ascertainable.
 Rust and loose scale, weld spatters, particles dust, fibres or other foreign material > 1 mm not
ascertainable. No accumulation of any particles.
 Moisture, liquids not ascertainable.
 For Manufacturer purchased valves: Manufacturer shall ensure compliance with cleanliness
requirements as defined in Annex A. Annex A shall be included to Manufacturers valve purchase
orders.
Adequate methods for cleaning, inspection and preservation of vacuum insulated piping are listed in the
Table 2. Deviations from requirements stipulated in the Table 2 shall be subject to prior approval by Purchaser.
For non-metallic components in LO, GO, KR lines the oxygen compatibility shall be proven by an independent
testing laboratory, e.g. BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung / Federal Institute for Materials
Research and Testing, Berlin).

5 Inspection
5.1 Visual inspection with white-light
This method will detect without magnification small particulate material such as dust, oil, grease and moisture. It
may be used in conjunction with other methods. A sufficiently bright level of artificial or natural light is important.
5.2 Visual inspection with UV-light (black light)
This test shall be used always in combination with a white light inspection.
An UV-light with a wave length between 320 and 370 nm shall be used in dark or near darkness at a distance of
about 10 to 20 cm from the surface or piece being examined.
Note: Not all hydrocarbons or organic oils fluoresce under UV-light. The method shall be combined with other
tests such as white-light inspection or wipe test.
5.3 Wipe test
The surface shall be rubbed lightly with white filter paper or with clean lint-free cotton or linen cloth. This paper
or cloth shall be examined under white light and/or UV light to find any contaminating traces. Several areas of
the component surfaces shall be tested in particular at edges and corners. Since it is not acceptable to leave
cloth or paper particles on the equipment, this method is not suitable for rough surfaces.
5.4 Pig inspection
Pulling a "pig" (covered with white lint-free cotton or linen cloth) through the pipe/spool followed by visual white-
light inspection of pig resp. UV-light inspection acc. to Table 2.
6 Documentation
Cleaning, inspection and preservation shall be reported by Manufacturer per valve and isometric drawing, using
the "Cleanliness Acceptance Report" acc. to Form 01.
Marking: Components for GO, LO, KR service shall be tagged CLEAN FOR OXYGEN SERVICE. Durable tag
shall be fixed with stainless steel wire to component.
Purchaser shall be invited for verification of cleanliness and review of relevant documentation prior to shipment.
