The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using
food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters,
and the impact of climate change.
In a world of plenty, where enough food is produced to feed everyone on the planet, hunger should be a thing of the
past. However, conflict, climate change, disasters, inequality, and – most recently – the COVID-19
pandemic means one in nine people globally is still going to bed hungry and famine looms for millions.

A member of the UN family, WFP is governed by an Executive Board consisting of 36 Member States, which provides
intergovernmental support, direction, and supervision of WFP’s activities. The organization is headed by an Executive
Director, who is appointed jointly by the UN Secretary-General and the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations. Powered by the passion, dedication, and professionalism of our 20,992 staff
worldwide, the World Food Programme (WFP) works in over 120 countries and territories to bring life-saving food to
people displaced by conflict and made destitute by disasters and to help individuals and communities find life-
changing solutions to the multiple challenges they face in building better futures. In conflict situations, we bring relief
to exhausted populations and use food assistance to build pathways to peace and stability – work for which WFP was
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

Feeding millions of the world’s hungriest people and helping millions more cope with the effects of conflict, climate
change, and entrenched poverty requires billions of dollars every year – our funding requirement for 2022 stands
at US$22.2 billion to reach 152 million people. Our operations are entirely funded through the generous voluntary
contributions of donor governments, institutions, corporations, and individuals. A total of 93.5 percent of all
government contributions go directly to supporting lifesaving and life-changing operations.

Agenda 2030 clearly states that sustainable development will only be possible through effective partnerships. True to
its spirit, WFP works with governments, other UN agencies, NGOs, private companies, and others to mobilize
resources, find innovative solutions, and reach vulnerable communities with the assistance they need, when they
need it. WFP holds itself and its staff to the highest standards of integrity and behaviour. We are committed to full
transparency and accountability to the people we serve and to the donors who generously fund our operations.

To ensure that we are fit for purpose and that we remain so in a constantly and rapidly changing environment, we
carry out periodic independent evaluations that provide donors and partners with greater detail about the
effectiveness, efficiency, relevance, impact, and sustainability of our work, and that helps us to continue improving.
We work to enhance nutrition in women and children, support smallholder farmers in improving productivity and
reducing losses, help countries and communities prepare for and cope with climate-related shocks, and boost human
capital through school feeding programs. Our operations are entirely funded through the generous voluntary
contributions of donor governments, institutions, corporations, and individuals.

To get to Zero Hunger, food is not enough. Providing food assistance in an emergency can save lives, but the right
nutrition at the right time can also help change lives and break the cycle of poverty. This is why, as the leading
organization providing food assistance to the world’s most vulnerable, the World Food Programme (WFP) prioritizes
nutrition as a core element of its work.
Despite significant progress over recent decades, poor nutrition remains a colossal and universal problem, with one in
three people on the planet affected by some form of malnutrition. Undernutrition – inadequate energy or nutrients –
continues to affect more than 150 million children worldwide, while rates of overweight and obesity are also rising in
all countries. Conflict and natural disasters are exacerbating the problem. Malnutrition at its extremes can be a matter
of life and death, and in the long term can hold back people and countries, undermining economies, and
development. 

One of the biggest challenges we have in Pakistan is addressing stunting and the overall nutrition deficit.
In Pakistan, National Nutrition Survey 2018 revealed a triple burden of malnutrition among children under 5 years of
age: undernutrition, hidden hunger caused by a lack of essential nutrients, and overweight. It noted that 40.2% of
children are stunted, as measured as the height too short for their age; 17.7% are wasted, or too thin for their height;
28.9% are underweight; with more than half being anemic and suffering from deficiencies in essential nutrients and
vitamins such as iron (28.6%), zinc (18.6%), vitamin A (51.5%) and vitamin D (62.7%) while 9.5% are overweight or
obese. Poor diets are a common denominator for all forms of malnutrition. The lack of diet diversity, whether because
of poverty, unaffordability, challenging food environment, and/or choices are key contributors to poor nutrition across
the life stages. In Pakistan, only 3.6 percent of children 6-23 months are achieving the Minimum Acceptable Diet
across the country and even lower among rural populations.

Area Of work:

Our area of work is Acute chronic malnutrition vitamin and mineral deficiencies. To cater the malnutrition WFP started
a fortification project small-scale wheat flour fortification. The prime Gole of the Fortification project is to reduce
micronutrient deficiencies through nutritionally improved diets in a safe and sustainable manner, especially for
women and children with the objectives of Strengthening and extending the enabling environment and regulatory
monitoring and enforcement of LSFF through the public sector. Expanding and sustaining LSFF, in compliance with
national fortification standards, by the private sector. Strengthening the design, monitoring, and evaluation of
fortification programs. Garnering and mobilizing global commitment, leadership, and resources to scale LSFF.

Wheat flour is the staple food in Pakistan with 124 Kg per capita per annum consumption thus is an excellent tool to
improve the diet nutritionally with the addition of micro-nutrients through fortification.

With an increasing percentage of businesses and retailers, relevant industries, and even general consumers sourcing
their staple food from small flour mills it’s almost 70% of consumers nationwide. These mills represent a huge
opportunity to increase the e availability and intake of nutrients. This is unique since most previous experience in
large-scale fortification could not be sustained due to the unavailability of the market. In contrast, WFP brings the
value of the improved food system by an evident increase in numbers and proportion Wheat flour is the staple food in

proportions of household preferring the fortified flour from 25% in December 2020 to almost 80% towards 2021
through the program,” fortification i.e. tackling micronutrient deficiencies through innovation. constitutes a game-
changing solution. Noushonama program under social protection etc. The fortification of wheat flour milled by the
large scale mills creates a unique opportunity for small-entrepreneurs to contribute to national agenda on improved
nutrition hand in-hand with the government and WFP while gaining the visibility, increased demand and developing
linkages with government and other social protection programmes.

Providing fortified wheat flour to malnourished communities by linking the small mills and
businesses, shops, and marts.

Pakistan is losing 2 - 3 percent of its GDP annually due to a high burden of malnutrition which unfortunately has not
changed over the last four decades. The NNS 2018 revealed very high rates of micronutrient deficiencies - 41.7%
women of reproductive age (WRA) in Pakistan are anaemic, 18.2% iron deficient. The problem repeats itself in
children with 53.7% of under 5s suffering from anaemia, The lack of iron, Folic acid zinc, vitamin B12 and other
minerals, limits ability to fight disease, making it a major contributor to high maternal newborn and child death rates.
Malnourishment also affects cognitive and physical development, ultimately leading to reduced learning abilities and
lower productivity in adulthood. Pakistan’s rates of malnutrition are stagnating compared to reductions seen in
neighbouring countries.
Nearly half of all children in Pakistan are anemic and almost one-third of these children have iron deficiency anemia.
Micronutrient deficiencies can lead to long-term cognitive, motor and health impairments, making it difficult for
these children to realize their optimal potential. The anthropometric deficits, although prevalent across the country,
are systematically higher in peri-urban and rural areas where a majority of Pakistan’s207 million population lives. It
would be extremely unfortunate if the future of a countless number of Pakistani children is jeopardized, due to a
preventable problem.

Several initiatives are already in place to reduce malnutrition in Pakistan. Vision 2025 envisages a hunger free
Pakistan, providing safe food and adequate nutrition for the whole population. A multi-sector nutrition strategy for
Pakistan is underway and provincial multisector nutrition strategies have been developed but have yet to be
developed into plans. A revitalized National Fortification Alliance is in operation, and all provinces have constituted
Provincial Fortification Alliances.

Malnutrition can be addressed by using low cost and proven interventions such as large-scale wheat flour fortification.
Wheat flour fortification is the most cost-effective strategy, providing nutritional benefits without requiring people to
change their eating habits or purchasing patterns. In Pakistan, wheat flour fortification is central to overcoming these
deficiencies. National standards now require that wheat flour be fortified with iron, folic acid, Vitamin B12 and zinc,
Adequate nutrients supplied through fortified wheat flour should ideally form part of a balanced diet.

Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) play an important role for the healthy functioning of our body – one missing
nutrient can disrupt the whole metabolic system in our body affecting our ability to digest or absorb foods. According
to nutrition experts, we need more than fifty nutrients every day, and while they are required in small quantities, their
absence causes serious health problems. Micronutrients work as co-factors, helping digestion, absorption and
metabolism and affecting our health in general. Fortifying the wheat flour with essential minerals by providing the
micro feeders to the small scale flour mills, capacity building, and providing premix. The packed fortified wheat flour
with fortified logo then marketed through developing linkages between producer and sellers online business such as
food panda, Jovi etc. Demand generation of fortified wheat flour was conducted through LHWs social mobilizers,
social mobilization activities on mega marts, and stores they took fortified wheat and massage door to door.

The methane emissions from food wasted results are 86 times more potent in driving temperature
increases than CO2 emissions.S4S prevents Annually 22,750 Tons of food from getting wasted by
making it non-perishable.S4S reduces the need for transportation by reducing the volume to 8 times by
removal of water at the farm gate and reducing the need for transportation by 8X, thus saving on CO2

1.Adoption cycle: S4S works in the Agri sector with 1 year of annual cycle time. S4S has identified
crops in a manner that for the entire year farmers have crops to process. 2.Gender Factor: Women in
rural areas don't have decision-making power in the household and financial decisions. To overcome
this issue, S4S has designed a model to enable women participation: With No upfront capital required
for asset purchase, No need to travel outside for training, Training, and Development Services at the
doorstep ensures that women save time and have no dependence on male members to do business.

S4S empowers landless women farmers training them to be micro-entrepreneurs and equipping them
with access to finance technology, and market linkage.S4S provides an assured additional income to
these women, increasing their annual profit by 50-200% and giving money directly in the hands. As the
money-earner of the family, these poor women who were earlier treated as mere labor have now
progressed as decision-makers of the family.
They have gained a new economic and social identity as leaders, entrepreneurs, grassroots advocates,
and climate change-maker driving social and political change in family and community.

Project Title: Ensure year-wise nutritional food security to Indian Women through Community level
implementation of Domestic Solar Conduction Dryer (SCD) [Supported under Grand Challenges India,
funded by BIRAC, Gates Foundation, USAID, and DBT] Based on the positive impact such as increase
in dietary diversity and income, and reduction in anemia, S4S received another grant from USAID as a
part of its “Feed the Future: Grand Challenge on Leveraging Agriculture to Improve Nutrition” program
to initiate a similar project in Bangladesh A 36% increase was observed in the Dietary Diversity Score
in the intervention group as compared to the control group in the lean season.

S4S is governed by a strong and experienced board comprising of global marquee investors - Sunanda
Madan of Acumen Fund and Seth Silverman of Factor[e] Ventures. The board of Directors also
includes Hemendra Mathur who is a pioneer in the global agri-food industry.
The board also includes 2 Founder Directors - Myself and my colleague - Ashwin Pawade. S4S's
impact is monitored and governed by Shell Foundation, DBS Foundation, and Yunus Social
Business. S4S advisory committee includes members from AgFunder USA, Unreasonable Group,
Yunus Social Business, DBS Bank, Government of India, UN Women and World Economic Forum,
Accenture.

also the grower farmer network along with skill development and nutrition training

*2.14 How is your solution or organisation addressing COVID-19 pandemic?

The pandemic also served as a surprising validation of S4S’s decentralized model. Following the
“great reverse migration,” in which a mass movement of migrant laborers returned home, many
farmers were in search of livelihood options that did not require travel outside of their village. Their
families struggled with food insecurity and disrupted access to the market. S4S was flooded with
inquiries for processing partnerships who lost their access to markets and now can earn additional
income without moving out of their villages and earn income by processing at farm/home. S4S has a
pipeline of 2000 ME to enter processing.
Inspiration

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, was a pioneering advocate of global
sustainability and human development. Leading by example, he placed great value in the pursuit of socio-
economic development that meets the needs of both current and future generations. Continued through the
Prize, Sheikh Zayed’s legacy is a source of inspiration for the entire world.

The inspiration criterion requires organisations to demonstrate that their solution:

• reflects Sheikh Zayed’s core values – tolerance, sustainability and human development that were central to
his own approach and actions;
• has inspired and influenced other organisations to advance sustainable and human development; and
• has further inspired sustainable actions from the wider community by instigating behavioural
changes.

*3.1 What (or who) inspired you to develop this solution and how does that reflect Sheikh
Zayed's legacy?

Born in one of the most drought-hit districts of India Beed, Maharashtra in a farming family, I learned
at an early age that while we had enough land to till, there was no water, market, or credit available to
support the land leaving us crippled in a debt cycle. Pushing many of the community members to take
extreme steps (suicide). Also in the local market, I also saw most of the produce getting wasted, and
farmers never get the right price for their produce. Growing up amidst these challenges - inspired me to
commit to building a sustainable and equitable food system. With a doctorate in Sustainable Agriculture
Technologies, I founded S4S Technologies- science for society with sustainability and human
development at the core of it. Working with farmers for the past 20 years - the S4S solution is designed
to reduce wastage and helping women farmers transform into entrepreneurs and move out of poverty.
S4S's work is aligned and reflects Sheikh Zayed's core values working towards people, planet, and
prosperity. Our farmers and our Team inspire us every day to do better and so do our partners as they
guide us to do better.

In the next 5-10 years, our long term vision is to scale our commitment towards UN Sustainable
Development Goals of : - GOAL 2: Zero Hunger: S4S is providing food security to vulnerable
communities and aims to scale this to 10 million individuals over a period of 5 years in 4 geographies in
Asia and Africa - GOAL 5: Gender Equality: With S4S's commitment to empowering landless women
farmers, S4S aims to reach 1 Million women globally with skill development in the market, finance,
and technology - GOAL 1: No Poverty: Aim to provide an additional income to 5000 women

S4S partners with local governing bodies at the village level to strengthen raise awareness about
nutrition and food wastage. This successful partnership has inspired the government to replicate this
model in other states of India.S4S partners with financial institutions like DBS Bank to make finance

With a market size of USD 17 billion, India’s 11% of fruit and vegetable supplies are consumed by
industrial segments. This customer segment sees challenges of daily purchase, long preparation time,
high cost, and losses. With the Series A Round, S4S plans to achieve the following in 18 months after
fundraise: - Develop, test, and productized optimal tech integrated raw material sourcing of processing
and non-processing grade produce via farmers, FPOs, and aggregators to meet a scale of 3500 tons/day
(1mil tons/year) in 2024 -Revenue: USD 2 Million/month with 25% margins - MEs expansion to 2500 -
Build Sales Team along with support Teams HR, finance and Farm team - Capex reduction of 25% for
the given throughput
- Consolidate position in existing products and market segments to become the leading provider of dried
onion, garlic, ginger, tomato - Invest in S4S brand strengthening in existing customer segments to build
