What is Piracy?
● The act of seizing a ship or its cargo from its
lawful owners or their agents,
● This has been endemic to maritime nations
ever since man first set sail upon the high
seas.
● It had a spike in popularity in the
Elizabethan era
● A specialized category of officially
sanctioned piracy defined as "activities by
armed privately-owned vessel(s)
commissioned for war service by a
government," presented a threat in the
waters of the New World going back to the
earliest days of colonization
Why was it done?

● Piracy was introduced to help strengthen the Spanish Empire’s monopoly over the
New World.
● As the Spanish began to transport more valuable and precious cargo, many
pirates saw an opportunity to attack the Spanish vessels and claim the goods.
● The French and the British funded pirates to sabotage Spanish shipping in the
region and disrupt supply lines
Piracy in the Caribbean

Islands where piracy was rampant included:

● Port Royal, Jamaica

● Tortuga, Haiti
● Nassau, The Bahamas
Piracy Impact on Spanish Monopoly
Since pirates sailed with an agenda of procuring loot from nearby ships, there was
a responding improvement and decline in the dominant efforts of the Spanish
Empire as:
● Spoils were brought back home as a source of wealth to further strengthen
Spain’s economy.
● Piracy weakened Spanish-French relations, inferring that Spain thought that
he could function independently
● Piracy caused a destabilization in Spanish settlements, broke Spain’s
monopoly over trade and displayed that Spain could not protect their
territory.
How did the Spanish respond?
Many successful and devastating attacks from pirates forced the Spanish to sail in large fleets
consisting of many armed vessels
How Piracy In the New World Benefited the Colonies
● In America, the colonists were being
h
starved of goods they desperately needed
by the mother country.
● Pirates who stalked the Indian Ocean
carried back silver, gold and other precious
metals to the colonies and acted as a sort of
black market system for the colonists at
the time.
● The pirates created an economic boom by
selling stolen silks, satins, spices and other
merchandise which made Port Royal,
Jamaica, for example, known as the
“richest and wickedest city in the world”.
Famous Pirates
Their were many important and well known personalities during the time. Some of these
pirates include:

➢ The infamous Blackbeard (Edward Teach)

➢ Bartholomew Roberts
➢ Henry Morgan
