To Whom It May Concern,
I have known Breanna Lujan for about one year as her supervisor. I first met Breanna in Winter 2022 when I observed
her teach a high school biology lesson. Breanna is currently an undergraduate in the CalTeach math and science
credential program at UC Irvine and student teaching in a public school in Southern California and I again have the
pleasure to serve as her supervisor. As a junior in the program, Breanna showed such innate ability to teach that I
decided to work with her once again for this entire academic year. Every week, she submits a detailed weekly planner
for which I provide feedback. After the lesson observations, Breanna and I debrief what worked well and what could
be improved. From our many conversations about teaching and learning, I think that I know Breanna well enough to
recommend her as a highly qualified science teacher deserving of a position in your school district.
Breanna’s classroom mentor has provided her with the opportunity to write her own lessons. While she does use some
of the mentor’s ideas for lessons, Breanna is able to change these to meet her students’ needs as she sees fit. For
example, I observed a DNA vs mRNA card sort in one lesson that even reluctant students successfully completed.
Breanna’s detailed weekly planners include standards-based lessons as well as support for multilingual and special
needs students. Her lessons allow multiple pathways for her students to access the biology content, such as guided
notes, the use of movement to clarify the meaning of a vocabulary word, sentence frames/stems, and modeling how to
use academic writing/speaking. The quality of Breanna’s work shows that she has the oral and written communication
skills expected of an exemplary secondary teacher. I am excited to work with Breanna for a second time since I
recognized an innate talent for teaching in her. She has an easy way of interacting with students. She has informal
conversations when appropriate during the lesson. She always approaches a group of students with a big smile on her
face and they can tell that she enjoys being with them.

I believe that Breanna is very prepared to succeed as a secondary biology teacher. She is collaborative and collegial.
As a junior, Breanna collaborated with two peers to create her biology lessons and, currently, she works closely with
her mentor to meet her students’ needs. When we debrief, I am so impressed by Breanna’s reflections about her
lessons. She understands how her instructional decisions impact her students’ learning. I have been teaching
undergraduates at UCI for 22 years now and Breanna is in the top 5% of the students who have enrolled in our courses
in terms of her skill as a teacher.
I believe that Breanna will be very successful as a science teacher in your school district. She is highly motivated and
a natural teacher. Her energy is infectious. She will work well with the other science faculty at your school. I
strongly recommend her for a teaching position.

Sincerely,

Terry Shanahan, EdD
