Title: Lighting
Aim: To determine whether the classroom or the bedroom has better lighting for
studying.
Material/Apparatus:
● chalk
● meter ruler
● measuring tape
Procedure:
1. The height and width of each of the walls in the classroom were measured.
The total area of the walls was calculated.
2. The height and width of each of the windows in the classroom were
measured. The total area of the windows was calculated.
3. The percentage of the walls that were windows was calculated.
4. This was repeated for a bedroom at home.
Observations/Results:
Analysis:
After the experiment was completed, it was observed that the classroom had a
bigger percentage of window area, compared to the bedroom. The classroom had a
10.3% window area and the bedroom had a 5.5% window area. There were 24
lights in the classroom. In the classroom, there was natural light coming through
the windows and artificial light from the lights in the classroom. The bedroom had
1 light providing artificial light and 2 windows providing natural light. Therefore,
the classroom had better lighting for studying as there were 12 windows and 24
lights, providing both artificial and natural light. As well as, the classroom had a
bigger percentage of window area. The classroom is considered more efficient for
studying because sufficient lighting is necessary to prevent eye strain and mental
fatigue, and can increase task performance by 16%.
Bedroom:
Total Area of Bedroom Walls:
365.8 × 304.8 = 111,495.8 cm2× 2 = 222,991.6 cm2
365.8 × 426.7 = 156,086.9 cm2 × 2 = 312,173.7 cm2
222,991.6 cm2 + 312,173.7 cm2 = 535,165.3 cm2
Classroom:
Total Area of Classroom Walls:
264.2 × 1,356 = 358,255.2 cm2 × 2 = 716,510.4 cm2
264.2 × 886.1 = 228,823.6 cm2 × 2 = 457,647.2 cm2
716,510.4 cm2+ 457,647.2 cm2 = 1,174,157.6 cm2
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the lighting in the classroom was better as the classroom had a
bigger percentage of window area, 10.3%, compared to the bedroom, which had a
5.5% window area due to the classroom having 12 windows and 24 lights, whilst
the bedroom had 2 windows and 1 light.
Reflection;
From this experiment, I learned how the height and width of walls and windows
affects how much light comes into a room. I also learned how there are different
types of lighting, such as artificial and natural. This experiment can be useful to all
students, so that they may be able to have sufficient lighting to prevent eye strain
and enhance their performance.
