ME3302 IC Engines and Gas Turbines
Duration: 3 hours Max. marks: 100
Answer five questions out of seven questions.
Assume appropriate values if any is missing
Questions
(5x20 marks)
1. (i)Write on (a) mist lubrication system and (b)dry sump lubrication system. (8)
1. (ii) Discuss on the properties of lubricating oil. (8)
1. (iii) A four-cylinder, four-stroke, SI engine develops 14.7 kW at 1000rpm. The mean effective
pressure is 5.5 bar.
Calculate the bore and stroke of the engine, if the length of the stroke is 1.5 times the bore. (4)
2. (i) Write the principle of (a) thermosyphon system (b) force circulation system used in IC
engine cooling systems. (10)
(ii) Air consumption in a four-stroke petrol engine is measured by means of a circular orifice of
diameter 3.2 cm. The coefficient of discharge for the orifice is 0.62 and the pressure across the
orifice is 150 mm of water. The barometer reads 760 mm of Hg. Temperature of air in the room is
20oC. The piston displacement volume is 0.00718 m3. The compression ratio is 6.5. The fuel
consumption is 0.135 kJ/kg. The brake power developed at 2500rpm is 28 kW. (10)

Determine (a) the volumetric efficiency on the basis of air alone (ii) the air-fuel ratio (iii) the brake
mean effective pressure and (iv) the relative efficiency on the brake thermal efficiency basis.
3. (i) With illustrations write on normal and abnormal combustion in SI engines. (4)
(ii) Write on factors affecting knock in SI engines (6)
(iii) In a test of a four-cylinder, four-stroke engine with 75 mm bore and 100 mm stroke, the
following results were obtained at full throttle at a particular constant speed and with fixed
setting of fuel supply of 6.0 kg/h;
B.P. with all cylinder working : 15.6 kW
B.P. with no. 1 cut-out : 11.1 kW
B.P. with no. 2 cut-out : 11.03 kW
B.P. with no. 3 cut-out : 10.88 kW
B.P. with no. 4 cut-out : 10.66 kW
If the calorific value of the fuel is 83600 kJ/kg and clearance volume is 0.0001 m3, calculate;
(a) mechanical efficiency (b) indicated thermal efficiency (c) air standard efficiency. (10)

4.(i)With sketches discuss the stages of combustion in compression ignition (CI engines. (6)
(ii) Discuss the different parameters affecting the delay period. (8)
(iii)Write the merits of direct injection (DI) diesel engines. (6)

5.(i) Write in detail on formation of hydrocarbon emissions in IC engines. (6)


(ii) Write oxides of nitrogen (NOx). (6)
(iii)Discuss with necessary sketches on Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) in IC engines. (6)
(iv)Write the reasons for carbon monoxide emission in IC engines. (2)

6. (i) Discuss with necessary sketches on catalytic converter used in IC engines. (8)
(ii) In a trial of a single-cylinder oil engine working on dual-cycle, the following observations were
made;
Compression ratio : 15
Oil consumption : 10.2 kg/h
Calorific value of fuel : 43890 kJ/kg
Air consumption : 3.8 kg/min
Speed : 1900 rpm
Torque on the brake drum : 186 Nm
Quantity of cooling water used: 15.5 kg/min
Temperature rise : 36 oC
Exhaust gas temperature : 410 oC
Room temperature : 20 oC
Cp for exhaust gases : 1.17 kJ/kg K

Calculate; (a) brake power (ii) bsfc (c) brake thermal efficiency (d) draw the heat balance sheet on
minute basis. (12)

7. (i) With necessary sketches discuss the types of superchargers used in IC engines. (8)
(ii) Write on any three methods of supercharging. (6)
(iii) A four-cylinder, four-stroke, SI engine develops a maximum brake torque of 1600 Nm at
3000rpm. The brake mean effective pressure at the maximum engine torque point is 960 kPa.
Assume bore is equal to stroke.
Calculate the engine displacement, bore and stroke. (6)
