Decile of Ungrouped Data
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module 5 on Decile of

Ungrouped Data!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module 5 on Decile of

Ungrouped Data!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

EXPECTATION

At the end of this module, you will be able to illustrate and solve deciles of
ungrouped data.

PRETEST

Directions: Read and analyze each question. Choose the letter of the correct
answer.

1. What do you call the nine score points that describe the distribution, that is
divided into ten equal parts?
a. Median b. quartile c. decile d. percentile
2. Which is equivalent to the median?
a. first decile b. second decile c. fifth decile d. eight decile
3. Find D4 in the given set of data: 5, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 22, 32, 33
a. 9 b. 13 c. 17 d. 32
4. The following are the scores of 19 students in math test: 18, 20, 17, 17, 18,
28, 22, 23, 29, 27, 22, 20, 20, 19, 21, 18, 27, 23, 26. Find the seventh
decile.
a. 23 b. 26 c. 27 d. 29
5. The height (in centimeter) of 15 grade 10 students are as follows: 148, 149,
150, 150, 153, 154, 154, 155, 156, 157, 157, 160, 162, 164, and 168. Find
the 9th decile.
a. 164.8 b. 165.2 c. 165.4 d. 165.6

RECAP

Directions: Solve for the upper, lower quartile and the interquartile range of the
following set of data:

Data Lower Upper Interquartile

Quartile Quartile Range
1. 17, 19, 20, 24, 29, 35, 37
2. 42, 47, 48, 50, 52, 57, 62, 65, 70
3. 78, 62, 65, 53, 87, 89, 93, 77, 89, 69
LESSON

Can you recall the following metric system?

1. It is one-tenth of a meter.
2. It is one-tenth of a liter.
3. It is one-tenth of a gram

If you can recall the answers to the question above, then you will now have
an idea about decile.
If a strip of paper is cut into 10 equal parts, how many intervals are there
between the 10 equal parts?
The deciles are the nine score values that divide a distribution into ten equal
parts. It can be observed that D5 or the fifth decile is also the median of the set of
data.

Examples:

1. The list below shows the test scores of grade 9 students:

18, 21, 20, 17, 15, 29, 27, 22, 28

a. Find the 3rd decile or D3

Solution:
Steps in finding the decile of ungrouped data:

1. Arrange the data in ascending order: 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29
𝑘
2. Use the formula 𝐷𝑘 = (𝑛 + 1)𝑡ℎ position/score
10

3
𝐷3 = (9 + 1)
10
3
= (10)
10
30
=
10
𝐷3 = 3rd position/score

15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29

The 3rd score of the set of data is 18. Therefore, 𝐷3 = 18

b. Find the 7th decile or D7
7
𝐷7 = (9 + 1)
10
7
= (10)
10
70
=
10
𝐷7 = 7th position/score

15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29

Therefore D7 = 27

2. Find D2 and D8 of the given set of data:

45, 49, 46, 52, 59, 55, 46, 57, 63, 68, 73, 69

Solution:

Steps in finding the decile of ungrouped data:

1. Arrange the data in ascending order:

45, 46, 46, 49, 52, 55, 57, 59, 63, 68, 69, 73
𝑘
2. Use the formula 𝐷𝑘 = (𝑛 + 1)𝑡ℎ position/score
10
a. D2
2
𝐷2 = (12 + 1)
10
3
= (13)
10
39
=
10
𝐷2 = 3.9th position/score, which lies between the 3rd and 4th score.
45, 46, 46, 49, 52, 55, 57, 59, 63, 68, 69, 73

Interpolate the value to obtain D2

1. Subtract the third data from the fourth data: 49 – 46 = 3
2. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the position of
D2 : 3 (0.9) = 2.7
3. Add the result to the 3rd or the smaller number : 46 + 2.7 = 48.7
Therefore, D2 = 48.7
b. D6
6
𝐷6 = (12 + 1)
10
6
= (13)
10
78
=
10
𝐷6 = 7.8th position/score, which lies between the 7th and 8th score.
45, 46, 46, 49, 52, 55, 57, 59, 63, 68, 69, 73
Interpolate the value to obtain D2
1. Subtract the seventh data from the eighth data: 59 – 57 = 2
2. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the position of
D6 : 2 (0.8) = 1.6
3. Add the result to the 3rd or the smaller number : 57 + 1.6 = 58.6
Therefore, D6 = 58.6
