Matt Slattery, 18 y/o was admitted for Depression and Substance abuse (cocaine). Not taking any
medication at the moment. Patient appears agitated, irritable, anxious, restless. He is Dysphoric
Memory is intact. He recalls past events. He is able to answer questions appropriately.

Pathophysiology of the admission psychiatric diagnosis:


Depression: It is an imbalance of one or several neurotransmitters, or an impaired ability to use available
norepinephrine can result in apathy, reduced responsiveness, or slowed psychomotor activity.
Substance Abuse (Cocaine): “Cocaine inhibits the monoamine reuptake mechanism, which is the primary
mechanism for terminating transmitter action. Chronic cocaine self-administration appears to alter receptor
sensitivities in the Nucleus Accumbens and other parts of the reward/reinforcement system.”
