Course Outcomes

 CO1: Analyze planar mechanisms using graphical and analytical

methods.
 CO2: Design cam mechanism and perform kinematic analysis of gear
mechanisms and gear trains.
 CO3: Synthesize simple mechanisms for specified kinematic tasks.
 CO4: Understand the basic configuration of robots.
Evaluation Policy
 Pre-requisites: ZZ1001D Engineering Mechanics
 Mechanics is the branch of engineering dealing with bodies and their
dynamical behaviour
 Definition of Mechanism and Machine by German Kinematician
Franz Reuleaux
 Mechanism: assemblage of resistant bodies, connected by movable
joints, to form a closed kinematic chain with one link fixed and having the
purpose of transforming motion.
 Machine: combination of resistant bodies so arranged that by their
means the mechanical forces of nature can be compelled to do work
accompanied by certain determinate motions.

Slider Crank Mechanism
Structure and Mechanism
A structure is also a combination of resistant (rigid) bodies, but its purpose is
to make the system rigid
 No internal mobility
 No relative motions between the members

Structure Mechanism
Ref.: Shames, Engineering Mechanics, Ref.: George H. Martin, Kinematics and
PHI, 4th ed. Dynamics of machines, McGraw-Hill, 2nd ed.
Characteristics of a Mechanism

 Mechanical systems
 A set of interconnected bodies
 Used to transmit and transform motion
 Links or members, assumed rigid
 Joints or kinematic pairs
 Constrained relative motion
Analogy Between Different Terms

 A direct analogy between different terms –

 Structure  Statics
 Mechanism  Kinematics
 Machine  Kinetics
Major Aspects of Study of Mechanisms
 Design (or synthesis) and analysis are the two major aspects of the study of
mechanical systems

 To design is to formulate a plan for the satisfaction of a human need

 In the case of a machine, it is the process of prescribing the sizes,
shapes, material compositions and arrangements of parts so that the
resulting machine will perform the task

 Analysis – Critically examines an already existing or proposed design, to

judge its suitability for the task
 Evaluation and rating of things already conceived
