1 Driving with axle loads in excess of 12 t

If the truck crane is rigged in a different mode for on-road driving than as
described in the accompanying GMK 5130–1 operating instructions, then the
truck crane will always exceed the 12.0 t axle load in driving mode.

Driving modes with no more than 12.0 t axle loads are to be found in the ac-
companying GMK 5130–1 operating instructions, chapter Driving the truck cra-
ne in section Driving mode tables.

H
According to the Special Types General Order (STGO) in the UK, the follo-
wing stipulations apply for driving with more than 12.5 t axle loads:
– The STGO travel speeds and axle loads apply only for public roads in the
UK.
– The STGO travel speeds are allowed only up to tyre speed limits (see tag
at dashboard and the GMK 5130–1 operating instructions).

17
– Driving with axle loads higher than 12.0 t will increase the braking/stop-
ping distance. The braking performance of the crane shall be established
by the driver at the actual axel loads under normal operating conditions.
Special attention shall be payed to local conditions (e. g. road condition,
weather condition, ...).
23
– Every attempt should be made to distribute the load evenly on all axles
were possible (see instruction manual).
– Axle loads in higher than 12.0 t will cause significantly more wear and tear
of components (e. g. brake linings, tyres, shafts, gearbox, engine, suspen-
sion, ...).
30

– The driver is responsible for taking into account the above points when
driving a crane with axle loadings exceeding 12.5 t per axle (as allowed
under the STGO Regulations).

G
51

Risk of accidents due to uneven load distribution

Braking distances are lengthened by uneven axle loads. The wheels on in-
dividual axle lines may lock when braking, causing the crane to swerve. Ve-
hicle handling is adversely affected.

Drive with due care and attention!

G
Risk of accidents due to excessive load on the tyres
Never exceed the maximum speed permissible for the current axle load
(à p. 1 - 7). In this way you prevent the tyres becoming overloaded during
driving, and bursting.

If country-specific regulations (like the STGO in the UK) in the country whe-
re the truck crane is operated allow driving with axle loads in excess of
12.5 t, proceed as follows for trips with axle loads in excess of 12.5 t:
• Calculate the axle loads for the current rigging mode with which the truck
crane is to be driven; à p. 1 - 3.
• Establish the maximum permissible speed for the current axle load and
do not exceed it; à p. 1 - 7.
• Keep to the shortened maintenance intervals which occur when driving
with axle loads in excess of 12.5 t; à p. 1 - 8.

1.1 Calculating the current axle loads
This section contains a table for calculating the current axle load depending
on how the truck crane is rigged. The basic equipment specified consists of
the following:
– 14.00 R25 tyres
– 10 x 6 x 10 drive
– 1.0 t compensation weight or Auxiliary hoist installed on the turntable
– No further equipment (e.g. lattice extension, counterweight, hook blocks,
lifting gear).

Example This example is based on a truck crane with 16.00 R25 tyres, 10 x 8 x 10
drive and an eddy current retarder. There is also a 18 m swing-away lattice
extension folded on the side, a 3-sheave hook block at the front (hung on the
bumper) and a 16.00 spare wheel in the spare wheel holder. With rigged
5.0 t counterweight on the turntable and 10.0 t counterweight on the carrier,
the following axle loads result:

*)
The basic equipment includes the 1.0 t compensation weight or the
auxilliary hoist (additional equipment).

The total weight of the truck crane is therefore 67 730 kg.

The axle load on each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd axle lines is 13 457 kg and the
total weight on each of the 4th and 5th axle lines is 13 681 kg.

In the next section, you can use these results to establish the maximum per-
missible speed, which must not be exceeded.

1.2 Establishing the maximum permissible speeds

G
Risk of accidents due to excessive load on the tyres
Never exceed the maximum permissible speed for the current axle load. In
this way you prevent the tyres becoming overloaded during driving, and
bursting.

If country-specific regulations allow driving with axle loads in excess of

12.5 t, the highest speeds listed below must not be exceeded in order to pre-
vent damage to the tyres. The maximum permissible speed depends on the
size of the tyres and the axle loads. The values in the following table only
apply for the tyre pressure specified:

Current Maximum permissible

*) speed limitations are maximum values, see tyre specification.

Example The highest axle load has always to be taken into account. In the example
from the previous section, the maximum axle load with 16.00 R 25 tyres was
51

13 681 kg. In this example, the maximum permissible speed according to

the table would be 65 km/h (40 mph).

1.3 Components with shortened maintenance intervals

H
Deutsche GROVE GmbH is not liable for damage which occurs due to pre-
mature wear caused by driving the truck crane with axle loads in excess of
12.5 t and unallowed speed.
If the truck crane is driven with axle loads in excess of 12.5 t, the crane ope-
rator/crane user bears sole responsibility.

S
Risk of damage from premature wear
You must observe the following, shortened maintenance intervals even
when the axle loads only briefly exceed 12.5 t. When driving with axle loads
in excess of 12.5 t, premature wear of parts that are under particular stress
cannot be ruled out.

If the truck crane is to be driven with axle loads in excess of 12.5 t, the parts
subject to particular stress listed below must be checked at least once every
three months by suitably trained personnel. All damage which occurs, or

rized workshop:

– Complete brake system

– Steering

– Tyres

– Drive shafts (longitudinal cardan shaft and cardan shafts between axle
