DO YOUR RESEARCH
This Activity Pack contains three activities to help you apply what you have learned in
the ‘Do Your Research’ module.
In Activity 1 you will find links to online tools that will help you define your research.
In Activity 2 you will receive a set of top tips to help you effectively research careers and
jobs online. You will also have the opportunity to practice these tips.
In Activity 3 you will find templates to help you organize your research throughout the
application process.
There is an activity for each stage of the research method used in the module – Define,
Locate and Organize.
ACTIVITY 1: DEFINE
ONLINE TOOLS
You can use tools, like a mind map, to visually illustrate your thoughts and ideas. Using
a mind map helps define the information you would like to locate and makes it easier to
organize it. Below, there are three online sources you can use to get started with your
mind map.

works best for you!

ACTIVITY 2: LOCATE
Researching, both online and with professionals, is important before any interview or
application that you complete. To help improve your research online, read the top tips
below and try the practice scenario.
Remember, you can use the top tips when doing general research, like completing the
templates in Activity 3.
SEARCH ENGINES
o Google- www.google.com
o Yahoo- www.yahoo.com
Use search engines, which are websites that help you find information you are looking
for. By typing in keywords or phrases, search engines will give you a list of websites that
are related to your search criteria. Sometimes, simply typing keywords like 'construction'
or ‘retail’ in the search bar won't give you the best set of results. Using features like the
'refine your search' option can be very helpful. When you use this option, you will be
able to do things like search more specifically or select which region you would like the
results to come from.
WEBSITE NAVIGATION
Most websites (e.g., the website of a company you want to apply to or a blog that
provides insight on the type of career you are pursuing) have menu bars where you can
select options to navigate the site. Try to think about where the information you are
looking for would be.
Most websites allow you to search within their site. Once you have found a good
website, you can use the search bar on the website to locate more information and find
more of what you were looking for. The search bar is usually denoted by a magnifying
glass icon and can help speed up your research. For example, on a company website
you can enter the job title in the search bar.
USING CTRL + F
Pressing the Control key (Ctrl) and the ‘f’ key at the same time brings up the “find”
function or Find Bar. This allows you to search for a word on the page you are currently
viewing by entering this word into the Search Bar.
RELIABLE INFORMATION
It is important to make sure the information you find is reliable and from a trustworthy
source. Always be careful when asked to give personal information (particularly
addresses and bank information).
Imagine you are looking for a retail job in New York City. Complete the tasks below
using the tips given above.
Use a search engine to find a website for a large retailer in New York City.
If the website has a search bar, use it to search for information about the
company and its history.
Try clicking through the company website to find their contact details.
Use the Ctrl + f find bar on the same site to search for careers in your
selected company.
Now that you have practiced using the tips for searching online, move on to the next
activity and use your new skills to help you research as you complete one or more of
the templates.
ACTIVITY 3: ORGANIZE
Research can help when you are choosing a career, writing an application form, or
when you are going to an interview. This activity contains four templates that will help
you research and organize your thoughts.
Based on where you are in the job-seeking journey, choose a template and complete
the information with the most relevant and detailed information you can provide. Here is
a quick overview of each template:
o Use this template if you know what industry you want to work in and you want
to find out more about it.
o Use this template if you want to research a company. This might be helpful
when you have already selected an industry and are looking for specific
places to apply to, or once you have been offered an interview.
o Use this template when you know what type of job you want to apply for. This
will help you find more information about a specific job.
o Use this template before an interview to make sure you have all the
information you need to prepare for it.
Keep these templates after you’ve filled them out so you can use them during an
interview or to continue your research.

some potential careers within it.
