1. The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler is a modern drama. Read “About the genre”. What sort of
language is used in modern drama?
About the genre – modern drama

Modern drama is often set in the familiar world around us. The subject matter is always the problems
people have at home, at school and in society. The dramas use the normal language and vocabulary
that people use in their everyday lives. Schools are a popular setting for children’s modern drama,
novels, films and television series. The plots are often about bullies, exams, after-school activities,
sports and romance. The turbulent of Tyke Tiler is set in a modern English primary school.

2. Read “About the author”. What was Gene Kemp’s job? Why do you think she wrote about
schools?
About the author – Gene Kemp
Born : 1926 , Staffordshire , England

Most important books : The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler (1977) , The Clock Tower Ghost
(1981) , Charlie Lewis Plays for Time (1984)

Gene Kemp was a school teacher and she started writing for children in 1972. She wrote The
Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler as a novel first and she won two literary prizes for it. Later on, she
rewrote the novel as a play. She has written many other plays and novels for children.

Alliteration
Alliteration is when the first sounds in words are repeated. Look at the title of the play : The
Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler. The “T” is repeated at the beginning of four of the main words.
Alliteration makes names, book and film titles, and phrases memorable, and also makes the writing
more rhythmical. Poets often use alliteration in poetry because it can make the rhythm stronger.
Alliteration is also often used in advertising slogans.
