Rainfall Harvesting
Solutions:
523m3/4 = 130.75m3 – average quarterly demand
Per capita monthly demand = 523/12 = 43.58m3/8
= 5.45m3
5.45/30 = 0.18m3/day = 180 li/person/day
CALCULATING THE STORAGE
CAPACITY
● From the previous example:
– To satisfy the total quarterly demand using
pure rainfall water as a source, that household
will need 130-135m3 of storage.
– The amount of water needed by each person
is 180li/day. This could mean that there are
other amenities present in this household or a
number of fixtures is substantial.
● If the quarterly storage is deemed too much, the
water balance will then have to be determined.
CALCULATING THE STORAGE
CAPACITY
● If a rainwater harvesting system is to be the sole
water supply, overbuilding ensures a safety
margin.
● As with many things in life, it helps to hope for
the best but plan for the worst.
● Even when budget constraints may not allow the
user to install as much storage capacity as a
sizing method may indicate, it is important to
provide for an area where additional tanks or
cisterns can be installed at a later date when
finances permit.
ESTIMATING THE DEMAND
● The storage capacity that will be determined will
only be effective if it can fully serve the demand
to which is was tasked to supply.
● To make the demand analysis more accurate. It
will be necessary to determine the behavior of
the end user. This is quite difficult on our own but
a study by AWWA will be helpful.
