QUIZ #2

Read each situation carefully. Solve the following problems, show your solutions
and encircle/box your final answer/s. Use your Calculators.

Situation 1:

Two dice are rolled, find the probability that the sum is
1.) equal to 1
2.) equal to 4
3.) less than 13

Solution:
Total possible outcome = 62 = 36
1.) equal to 1
0
 Probability = =0
36

2.) equal to 4

 Favorable Outcome (sum equal to 4) = 3

= {(1, 3), (2, 2), (3, 1)}
3 1
 Probability = 36 = 12

3.) less than 13

(1, 1), (1, 2), (1, 3), (1, 4), (1, 5), (1, 6)
(2, 1), (2, 2), (2, 3), (2, 4), (2, 5), (2, 6)
(3, 1), (3, 2), (3, 3), (3, 4), (3, 5), (3, 6)
(4, 1), (4, 2), (4, 3), (4, 4), (4, 5) (4, 6)
(5, 1), (5, 2), (5, 3), (5, 4), (5, 5), (5, 6)
(6, 1), (6, 2), (6, 3), (6, 4), (6, 5), (6, 6)
 There are 36 combinations that are all less than 13 therefore
3
 P (sum < 13) = 36 = 1 = 100%
Situation 2:

There are 18 tickets marked with numbers 1 to 18. What‘s the probability of selecting a
ticket having the following property:

1.) even number

2.) number divisible by 3

3.) prime number (Hint: A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 whose
only factors are 1 and itself.)
4.) number divisible by 6

Solution:
1.) even number

 Favorable Outcome {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18}

9 1
 Probability = = = 50% or 0.5
18 2

2.) number divisible by 3

 Favorable Outcome {3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 }

6 1
 Probability = = = 33% or 0.33
18 3

3.) prime number (Hint: A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 whose
only factors are 1 and itself.)
 Favorable Outcome {2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17}
7 7
 Probability = = = 38.9% or 0.389
18 18

4.) number divisible by 6

 Favorable Outcome {6, 12, 18}
3 1
 Probability = 18 = 6 = 16.6% or 0.166
Situation 3:

32 playing cards include 4 aces and 12 figures. Determine the probability of a randomly selected
card to be an ace or a figure.

Solution:
 Probability of two mutually exclusive events
4
A – selected ace = P (A) = 32
12
B - selected figure =P (A) = 32

 P (A ꓴ B) = P (A) + P (B)

4 12
P (A ꓴ B) = 32 + 32

16 1
P (A ꓴ B) = = = 50% or 0.5
32 2

The probability of selecting an ace or a figure equals 50%.

Situation 4:
If a bag of balloons consists of 47 white balloons, 5 yellow balloons, and 10 black balloons, what is
the approximate likelihood (probability) that a balloon chosen randomly from the bag will be black?

Solution:
Total number of balloons in the bag = 47 + 5 + 10 = 62 balloons

 Number of black balloons is 10

10 5
So probability of black balloon is = 62 = 31 = 16% or 0.16
 Therefore the probability of getting a black balloon on the bag is 16%.
Situation 5:
From a pack of cards, three cards are drawn at random. Find the probability that each card is
from different suit.

Solution:
 1st card can be from any suit therefore:
52
Probability = 52 = 1 = 100%
The remaining cards are 51

 2nd card should be from different suits, 39 cards hence:

39 13
Probability = = = 76.47% or 0.76
51 17
The remaining card are 50

 3rd card should be from the remaining 2 suits = 26 cards therefore:

26 13
Probability = 50 = 25 = 52% or 0.52

Situation 6:
Two cards are drawn from the pack of 52 cards. Find the probability that both are diamonds or
both are kings.

Solution:
13 12 1
 Probability both cards are diamonds = 52 x 51 = 17 = 5.88% or 0.059

4 3 1
 Probability both cards are kings = 52 x 51 = 221 = 0.45% or 0.0045
