The social learning theory was heavily influenced by Albert Bandaura. This theory
helped to improve research relating to social development. The theory focuses on “modeling,

parents or other children. This theory has evolved to also help understand cognition. For
example, “Bandara has shown that children’s ability to listen, remember, and abstract general
rules from complex sets of observed behaviors affects their imitation and learning” (Berk, 2022,
p. 17). This explains that observing others not only affects a child’s actions, but their learning as
well. When the child gets older, they can have more control in who they become close to. This
gives them more say in who they want to imitate, even without realizing it (Berk, 2022). For
example, the friends they choose to have will impact their growth similar to how a parent would.
Although this theory presents important ideas, it does have some limitations. It does not take into

Social learning theory was a part of my life when I was in second to third grade. I was a
dancer and tried to fit in with the rest of the class by wearing similar clothes. I remember
wearing a similar ballet skirt and shoes that the other girls were wearing. After a few weeks, I
decided to branch out and start wearing plastic flower clips in my hair. A few weeks later,
everyone had them. Since my friends and I were watching each other, each of our styles
changed. We influenced one another to follow the trends within our class. In addition, we were
all selecting specific people to imitate. We decided to be friends and look up to one another

because of our shared connection with dance. This connects to the social learning theory since
