MYP 5 Lesson Plan 1

This science lesson focuses on photosynthesis and how light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis. Students will design an experiment to measure how light intensity impacts the rate that plants produce oxygen through photosynthesis. They will form a hypothesis, explain how to manipulate the variables and collect data in their experiment. At the conclusion, students will complete an exit ticket and self-reflection sheet to assess their understanding of how light intensity influences the rate of photosynthesis.

Global Context/Key and Related Concepts: Context Scientific and technical innovation
ATL Focus/IB Learner Profile: Thinkers and Inquirers

Connections to real-life situations (authentic learning):

Lesson Learning Outcomes (objectives) During this lesson, students will:
KNOW: Photosynthesis is the process when green plants use sunlight to synthesize its own organic matter from carbon dioxide (CO 2) and water (H2O). Generally in plants,
photosynthesis involves green pigment chlorophyll and generating oxygen (O 2) as a secondary result.
UNDERSTAND: The speed of the oxygen production, otherwise known as rate of photosynthesis can be affected by many factors such as the amount of carbon dioxide or
water supply, light intensity, temperature, color of the leaf…

DO: Criterion B- Inquiring and designing. Measure the effect of Light Intensity on the Rate of Photosynthesis

TEACHING and LEARNING

Opening Activity:
A progress sheet will be used to check progress in current lesson with 2 progress check points (see attached).
Main part of the Lesson and Learning Events: Learning/Progress Checkpoint/AfL:
i. explain a problem or question to be tested by a scientific investigation (Measure the Rubric and progress sheets, assessment grid used by teacher and
effect of Light Intensity on the Rate of Photosynthesis) students.
Differentiation:
ii. formulate a testable hypothesis and explain it using scientific reasoning
Mixed ability groups will be created.
iii. explain how to manipulate the variables, and explain how data will be collected EAL- Flashcards WITH STEP BY STEP METHOD with visuals
iv. design scientific investigations. Emiriti – 0
SEN – 0
Data collection and data processing
Lesson Conclusion/Summary: Exit ticket and self reflection sheet will be provided to the students to reflect (see attached)
