EARTH SCIENCE Week 3, Day 3

1. The document discusses a science lesson plan for 9th grade students about volcanoes in the Philippines. 2. The lesson plan aims to teach students about how volcanic eruptions affect society, the signs of an impending eruption, and the positive effects of eruptions. 3. Examples of positive effects that will be discussed include how volcanoes create new land and rich soil for farming, and how people have used volcanic ash and rocks for crafts and construction materials.

QUARTER: 3

Week: 3
Subject: SCIENCE Grade Level: Grade 9
Date: Day: 3
Content Standard: The Learners demonstrate an understanding of Volcanoes found
in the Philippines
Performance Standard: The Learner participates in activities that reduce risks and lessen
effects of natural phenomenon such as volcanic eruption.
Competency: Illustrate how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for human
use.
I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Knowledge discuss how volcanic eruption affects our society,
Skills enumerate the signs of an impending volcanic eruption, and
Attitude recognize the positive effects of volcanic eruptions in the society
through group presentations.

lesson
B. Establishing a purpose This lesson focuses on the different effects of volcanic eruptions
for the lesson in the society. It also deals about how these effects gave an
impact to our environment and human lives.

Volcanoes have done wonderful things for the Earth. They

helped cool off the earth removing heat from its interior.

Volcanic emissions have produced the atmosphere and the water
of the oceans. Volcanoes make islands and add to the continents.

Volcanic deposits are also used as building materials. In the

1960’s Robert Bates published Geology of the Industrial Rocks
and Minerals. He noted that basalt and diabase are quarried in
the northeastern and northwest states. Most of the basalt and
diabase is used for crushed stone: concrete aggregate, road
metal, railroad ballast, roofing granules, and riprap. High-
density basalt and diabase aggregate is used in the concrete
shields of nuclear reactors. Some diabase is used for dimension
stone (“black granite”).

the new lesson Let the students close their eyes. Begin only when students are
already in silent mode.
Let them imagine that they are in a village where a volcano is
present. Let them imagine the lives of people living near a
volcano. Give them ideas how and what it looks like. Let them
recall their happy moments with their family. After a while, the
volcano erupted.

(Note to the teacher: This can be done effectively if sound

effects will be applied while narration is going on. This will test
your acting prowess, establish a good environment to
successfully deliver the lesson)
D. Discussing new Ask the students how they perceive the effects of volcanic
concepts and eruption in both social well-being of a person and our
practicing new skills environment.
#1
The teacher will create a table and ask student volunteers to
write their insights on the positive and negative effects of
volcano.

Positive Effects Negative Effects

Volcanic eruption is often associated with negative effects. It

can cause loss of lives and properties. As the lava flows or

pyroclastic materials are ejected in the air, they can destroy
anything in their way. Actually, it has a good and a bad side. For
example, the eruption of Pinatubo in 1991, one of the longest
volcanic eruptions, has caused the decrease in the Earth’s
surface temperature for almost two years. The strong winds
during its eruption spread the aerosol particles from the plume
around the globe. The result was a measurable cooling of the
Earth’s surface for a period of almost two years.

E. Discussing new Volcanoes also affect people positively. For example, the
concepts and eruption of Pinatubo Volcano has created spectacular scenery in
practicing new skills its wake. Likewise, the eruption of Musuan Volcano in
#2 Bukidnon has produced very rich soils for farming years after its
eruption in 1867. People became creative also by making
earthenware out of the ash fall from the Pinatubo Volcano
eruption.

Despite the advantages that people get from volcanic eruption,
the major concern now is how to reduce the negative effects of
disasters to reduce loss and save lives.

F. Developing Mastery Students will be group into five and will perform guided by the
situation below:

“How do volcanic eruption affect society?”

Situation 2 – Dancers

Situation 3 – Painters

G. Finding practical In your respective homes, name some objects which do you
applications of think are products or benefits of having a volcano in your
concepts and skills in locality (if any), or benefits of volcanic eruptions. Also, ask the
daily living students how can they help inform the community or the society
to eradicate the number of lives loosed during volcanic eruption.

H. Making The teacher should emphasize to the students that eruption of

Generalizations and volcanoes can have both positive and negative effects. The
abstractions about the presence of volcanoes in the locality contributes in the holistic
lesson well-being of every humanity including its related environment.
However, it should not be considered as a threat. Though it will
create a tragic effect in the lives of those in its vicinity during
eruption. After studying this lesson, students will be able to
inform and disseminate information regarding the different signs
of impending volcanic eruption to save lives of their friends,
family and fellow mankind.
I. Evaluating learning Using students quiz notebook, ask the students to answer the test
below:

Test I. True or False. Write true if the statement is true and false
if it is not.
1. If there is an eruption, it is safe to leave the main power
switch on and the house open.
2. Wear mask and goggles when there is an ash fall.
3. An indication that a volcano is about to erupt is the
deformation of the ground near it.
4. After an eruption, sweep ash using water to clean the area
faster.
5. An evacuation plan should be prepared during volcanic
eruption.

Write  if the statement is a positive effect and  if the

statement shows a negative effect of volcanic eruption.
1. Develop new landscapes and formations that contribute in
the tourism industry.

entire ecosystem.
3. Decrease in the Earth’s surface temperature.
4. Contributes in the richness of soil for farming.
5. Disaster that will cause loss of lives and damage to
properties.
B. Additional Activities Students will ask information from their locality regarding their
for application or perception on the signs of the impending volcanic eruption.
