“ I did not know I have a Monkey in my head “ – this was the first thing that popped in my head
after hearing and listening to the TED Talk facilitated by Tim Urban. His interpretation of the cast
of characters in his stint was very clear. He clearly outlined what are the traits of those characters
and he always frame it back to US, people who are guilty of having these characters without even
making the audience feel guilty. He was able to get the message across without offending or
making his audience feel that they are being attacked. He did the opposite – by framing the
characters, he was able to relate to these characters himself and later on he talks to audience and
remind them that we all have them, the Instant Gratification Monkey, the Rational Decision Maker
and my favorite, the Panic Monster.
His use of simple infographics made it simple for the audience to picture out the characters
and the story behind them. He did not use complex graphics but instead he uses drawing that a 5
year old can draw. This is to remind everyone that we all are children inside and as kids, we often
rely on the Instant Gratification Monkey since when we were young, all we want to do is to have
fun and we focus on leisure without the sense of responsibility or accountability. I was quickly
drawn to him when he was engaging with the audience, he looks at his audience regardless of
where they are by moving around the stage and looking them in the eye. Him using himself as an
example humanizes him and he made the audience feel that he is a storyteller and not someone
who is much more superior that his audience.
Another thing that I enjoyed is his use of humor. The punchlines were time perfectly right at
the moment when they are all glued to him listening. He also does not hesitate to use himself as
an example and the humility to say that 6 months go, the TED talk was offered to him and he only
realized that it was fast approaching when he saw his name on the list of speakers. Another thing
that struck me was when he talked about the Panic Monster – they come in two ways, one with
deadlines coming up and the other one which is for me is more deadly, is the one that comes with
no deadlines. We are living in the world where there are deadlines – assignments, projects, school,
etc. All of these items have specific deadline but those without are the ones with a much bigger
on our lives – focusing on our health, getting healthy, getting a vacation and even focusing on one
self at times are being taken for granted because we all think that it can be pushed forward since
we are still young.
His TED Talk made me realize that life is too short – we need to do the opposite, do what is
expected of us right now and once we are done, we can enjoy our moment with the monkey.
3. Prepare a TOPIC for TED TALK delivery. (15 pts)

Topic for TED Talk: “ The Goldfish Named Wetlang “

Thursday morning 11am. Alas no school for today but wait! I have a lot of things to do in school
and I am at home – this is a disaster, I need my Goldfish Wetlang to help me get through the day.
You see all of us have that one goldfish pet named Wetlang. In the society we live in, we were
given this pet at one point of our lives. Let me introduce you to Wetlang.
He is that virtual pet we always use to delay things. In school, we adore him when we are
focusing on other non curricular activities. We would always call out “ wetlang “ if people are
talking to us and we are playing computer games or when we are too busy with out mobile phones.
This pet feeds of our delaying tactics. He enjoys moments where we were able to push back
activities or delay an activity or assignment for another day. And it is not just during non school
activities that Wetlang flourishes, he also loves deadlines, exams and assignments. We use
Wetlang when we are busy reviewing, when we are answering assignments and when we have a
deadline. This pet is selfish and he only wants the attention of its owner on the fun and sometimes
non value things.
At home, he is being used over and over again by its owner every time a family member is
asking its owner to either wash the dishes, clean up or set up a table or even do other chores.
Wetlang wants the world to stop and he just wants us to focus our attention on what we are doing,
either browsing thru social media, online games or sometimes just lying around doing nothing,.
The best trait of Wetlang is that it is a goldfish – it has a very short memory attention span and
its owner would always forget things. From the topics the professor have discussed to the “utos”
the owner’s mom asked the owner to do. This is where the bad side of Wetlang comes in – he
feeds its owner with such rush that when the deadline is fast approaching, the goldfish and owner
already forgot what they need to do and this pet will hide and let its owner do the hardwork. At
home, this pet causes a lot of nagging and scolding because the owner will sometimes forget what
is being asked of him and the parent will have to repeat itself and at times, the parents will get
mad because the chore has not been done for hours. And this is because we spent all of our time
with our pet goldfish named Wetlang. So I want to ask you – how do you take care of this pet?

4. Give at least 3 questions to be answered by your talk. (15 pts)

• How do we relate to our pet Goldfish named Wetlang and how it controls our lives?
• How this pet impacts our lives and the decisions we make everyday?
• Why is it important to know that we all have a pet named Wetlang – we procrastinate and
at times forget what we need to do or what is being asked of us to do?
