My passion to advocate for peace and conflict mediation in conflict-ridden zones in Africa has

motivated me to apply for the program to gain skills in conflict mediation and peacebuilding.
Armed conflicts in Africa have caused humanitarian crises, especially in the Sahel region,
Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). I envisage using this knowledge to
champion diplomacy and dialogue over conflict and war, using Regional and continental blocks
such as the Africa Union, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Southern
Africa Development Community (SADC) and others. This will ultimately galvanize efforts to see
the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goal, especially on democracy, social justice and
the peaceful co-existence of people.

With this position, I endeavour to become a professional in peacebuilding programming,

humanitarianism and international development, with an ambition to see the mitigation of conflicts
in Africa. My current academic experience at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)
University of London has given me the passion to play a leading role towards the negotiations for
peace in Africa and the resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy. I am studying
Master of Arts International Studies and Diplomacy.

In addition, my professional training skills are critical to augment my application for the PhD in
Conflict Studies. I have received Civic Leadership training skills and committed myself to
transforming Africa, awarded by the American funded, Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)
Regional Leadership Centre in South Africa. I also gained peace-building skills through the
certificate in Global/Local Justice and Peace Building awarded by the Asia-Pacific Centre of
Education for International Understanding. I also have certifications with UNICEF, ADB institute,
Sivio Civic engagement school, and others. These professional training skills are useful for this
PhD program and they determine how I am positioned to take a leading role in the Global South’s
social, political, and economic transformation. Therefore, this program will aid my understanding
and resonates with my co-curricular activities in both non-governmental organizations and civic
engagements to strengthen my professional training skills and enhance my knowledge of
humanitarianism. I am also currently a member of the International Association of Political Science
Students an organization that is advocating for peacebuilding in the Global South.
One of my greatest strengths is my previous academic background which has also inspired me to
apply for this position, to advocate for peace and security in conflict-ridden communities. I was
awarded a First-Class Bachelor of Science Honors Degree in Industrial Relations, a University
Book Prize, and the Vice Chancellors Award, a manifestation of academic merit and incessant
commitment to self-development and educational enrichment. To add, I was also awarded a Master
of Social Work with a higher GPA at Zhejiang Normal University. I am also currently studying
my thesis for the MA in International Studies and Diplomacy at SOAS University of London. In
addition, my academic excellence has owed me a prestigious scholarship from the Allan and Nesta
Ferguson Foundation at SOAS University of London to study International Studies and
Diplomacy. This gives me the confidence to believe in myself and my capabilities. It is against this
background that I seek this career-transforming opportunity to get the practical requisite skills,
knowledge, and expertise to participate in peacebuilding and governance in Africa and Zimbabwe
in particular and be a change agent.

My research interests revolve around the need for disarmament to be enforced in Africa using state
and non-state actors. I envisage researching and understanding more about the role of regional
organizations in Africa towards disarmament and how the African Union should lead the crusade
of disarming armed groups for peace and development in the Sahel region, Mozambique and DRC.
Focusing on these regions is critical because they are currently engulfed in conflicts that have the
potential of causing regional and continental instability. In addition, the UN Security Council
should capacitate efforts by the African Union towards the restoration of international peace and
security, as enshrined in the UN Charter Article 39.

Ultimately, I will play a significant role in Zimbabwe’s and the global South’s long-term progress
and developmental plans. I believe my research should be used by the African Union to inform
policies regarding the restoration of peace and security in the aforementioned regions in Africa. I,
therefore, have a strong conviction that my academic excellence and my active extra-curricular
participation in civic affairs will enable me to be chosen for this PhD position and play an active
role in global development and contribute immensely towards the attainment of Sustainable
Development Goals in Africa.
