A. Your job is to rank them in order of size on the chart below and estimate the length of each
(in nanometers, micrometers, or millimeters). The line in the bottom right corner the screen
is used to help you estimate. Sketch each of the object.

OBJECT SKETCH SIZE IN

NANOMETER,
MICROMETER OR
MILLIMETER
Human Hair nanometer

Dust Mite millimeter

Red Blood Cells nanometer

E. Coli millimeter

Staphylococcus micrometer
Ebola Virus micrometer

Rhinovirus micrometer

Use COMPLETE SENTENCES to write a brief summary of this activity, what you
did and what you learned.
--I learned that the viruses is micrometer size while our blood cell is nanometer
which is nano means “dwarfs” or smaller size
B. Bacterial Cell Model. Label the numbered parts on each line.

flagellum nucleoid

Plasma
membrane
plasmid

pilus capsule cellwall

C. Animal Cell Model

For this model, you will need to click on the various parts of the cell to go to a screen
that tells you about the parts. Answers to the following questions are found there.
1. What do mitochondria do?
--Generate most of the chemical energy needed to power
The cell’s biochemical reaction.
2. How big are mitochondria?
--0.5 micrometer and1 micrometer in length
3. What does the Golgi Apparatus do?
--Golgi apparatus is responsible for transporting, modifying and packaging
proteins and lipids into resides for delivery targeted destinations.
4. What is the difference between smooth and rough ER?
--Rough is like bumpy and smooth is like you feel good when you touch it.
5. Where is the nucleolus found?
--Inside the nucleous of a eukaryotie cell
6. What does the nucleolus do?
--It controls and regulates the activity of the cell and carries the genes, structures
that contain the heredity information.
7. What does the cytoskeleton do?
--helps cell maintain, cell shape help move organelles around
8. Cytosol goes by what other name?
--cytoplasm
9. What is the function of the cytosol?
--providing structural support for other organelles and in allowing transport of
molecules across the cell.
10. What is the function of the lysosome?
--degrading and recycling cellular waste, cellular signaling and energy metabolism
Sketch each of the following:

MITOCHONDRIA

GOLGI APPARATUS

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

NUCLEOLUS

CTOSKELETON

CYTOSOL

LYSOSOME

D. A cell is like our school. Each part of the cell (and school) has responsibilities that
must be done and certain organelles (people or places) to do them. Identify the
function of the following parts of the cell. Then, identify which person does the same
job (or a place like it) in the school. The first one is done for you as an example to
follow.

Cell Membrane Controls what goes in and out Front Office

Ribosomes Decoding the message and classroom

E. How to Use a Microscope

Now that you are familiar with cell parts we are going to get you ready to look through a
microscope. After you familiarize yourself with a microscope and how to use it, you will
be looking at some practice views through a microscope to see if you can tell plant and
animal cells apart.
