Weekly Lesson Plan in MAPEH (Music)- GRADE 7


Quarter: 1 , Week No.: 1- 3 , Date: August 30-September 16, 2022

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
 Differentiate the vocal music and instrumental music;
 Analyzes musical characteristics of any representative music from the lowlands
of Luzon after listening and;
 Perform folksongs from the lowlands of Luzon accompanied by improvised
instrument available in surrounding and create appropriate movements or
gestures to accompany the music selections

MELCS: The learner analyzes the musical elements of some lowland vocal and
instrumental music selections. (MU7LU-Ia-2)

II. SUBJECT MATTER:


Topic: Music of Luzon (Lowlands)
Sub-topic: Vocal Music and Instrumental Music
Reference/ Sources: Phoenix Book (MAPEH) pg. 5-8 and Learner’s Modules
Materials: PowerPoint, Laptop, Projector, and Audio materials (speaker)

A. Preliminary Activity

B. Review
The teacher will ask the class about their topic last meeting. Through question-and-
answer strategy, the teacher asks the learners questions related to the previous
topic.

The learners will raise their hand to answer, or the teacher might pick some of the
learners to respond.

Ask the students to recall the previous lesson by asking question/s.

C. Motivation
Let’s play “Name It to Win It”
Mechanics of the Game: The teacher will show pictures with jumbled letters and
tasks the students to identify what specific word fits the theme of the photo
presented. Identify the musical term used in the picture.
D. Lesson Proper
Activity
“Your Song Sounds Familiar”
In this activity, you will listen to some of the representative folk songs of the Lowlands
Luzon. For your reference, choose some of the YouTube links listed on the table below
and browse for sample folk songs on the internet. Watch and listen attentively and
analyze the characteristics and elements of the song. After analyzing the representative
folk songs, answer the questions below.

 Analysis
Learners are asked on their insights about the activity performed; the
questions will possibly lead learners to guess the topic or lesson for the day.
Moreover, HOTS questions, are also incorporated in the activity as follows:

1. Are you familiar with the songs given to you?


2. What have you observed in listening the songs without the lyrics?
3. How can a student like you benefit from knowing the music of Luzon in lowland
areas?
4. Based on the folksongs that you heard, how do folksongs depict the community’s
tradition, culture, and livelihood?
5. Why do you think the composers of these folk songs made it that way?

 Abstraction
The discussion focuses on the Music of Luzon specifically lowland areas.

MUSIC OF LOWLANDS OF LUZON


It composed of Vocal and Instrumental music, which varies in every province of
Luzon. The lowland folks are composed mostly of farmers, fishermen, artisans, vendor
and traders and common people. They have a deep faith in God, whom they served
with faith and devotion. His/her key celebrations are festivals for thanksgiving of good
harvest, and to honor Jesus Christ, Santo Niňo, Virgin Mary, and patron saints in the
Roman Catholic Church.
Through the various music used for liturgy, devotion, and secular purposes, one
will discover how the people of the lowlands express his/her feelings, history, and
religious beliefs.

1. FOLK SONGS OF THE LUZON (LOWLANDS)


Folk songs are written by the folk and are sung to accompany daily activities such as
farming, fishing, and putting baby to sleep. These are traditionally passed on orally.
Most Philippine folk songs have Spanish and other western influences.

Characteristics of folk songs


 Originally passed down orally to the family, and to the other members of the
community
 Learned through rote
 Sung in his/her own dialect
 Begins in one key and ends with the same key
 Composers and lyricists are usually unknown
 Mood can be sentimental, playful, and humorous
 Concept are based on people’s work, tradition, and culture
 Short and simple
 Either in duple meter, triple meter, or quadruple meter
2. LITURGY AND DEVOTIONAL MUSIC
Religious music of the lowlands of Luzon reveals the impact of Spanish colonization to
the Philippines which lasted for almost three centuries. With the introduction of
Christianity came the different Western forms of music that are used for religious rites.

3. SECULAR MUSIC
Colonially influenced secular music
Refers to any music that is not religious in nature.

 Harana – is a serenade traditionally sung by a man to express his love to a lady.


It is sung with emotion and usually accompanied by a guitar.
 Kumintang – originated from Balayan, Batangas. This song is with themes of love
and courtship.
 Pandanggo – courtship dance but it can also refer to a type of song to entertain
the farmers in the rice field.
 Polka – originated from a Bohemian dance became popular in Europe and
America in early 19th century. In the Philippines, it was performed in elegant
evening gatherings at the height of its popularity during the Spanish colonial
period.
 Balitaw – dialogue or courtship song in triple meter, mostly in 2 and 3 part forms
and arranged with counter melodies.
 Kundiman (“kung hindi man”) – through its melody, lyrics and expressive singing,
the kundiman conveys a selfless and spiritual attitude, intense love, longing,
caring, devotion and oneness not only with a romantic partner, but also with a
parent, child, spiritual figure, or the motherland.

4. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
(Brass Band)

The brass band is an ensemble of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.


It is usually played in fiestas, religious, and civic celebrations.

 Musikong Bumbong
- are Filipino marching bands that use woodwind instruments that are made of bamboo.
The musikong bumbong playing together produces good harmony.
 Pangkat Kawayan
- “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines”
- An orchestra that plays music using non-traditional bamboo instruments.
 Angklung Ensemble
- Small group of musicians who plays angklung bamboo instruments.
 Angklung instruments
- are made of bamboo rattle tubes attached to a bamboo frame.

 Application
Each group will create a short presentation; at least 1-2 minutes, you are going to
choose a song from the secular music of Luzon and sing it, accompanied by
improvised instrument available in surrounding and create appropriate
movements or gestures to accompany the music selections. Your performance
will be rated as follows:
Criteria for Singing Secular Music (teacher explains its criteria)
Musicality - 40%
Creativity - 30%
Mastery -  20%
Unity -  10%
Total -  100%
