Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark

Grammar: Articles

There are two articles in English, the definite article “the” and indefinite article “a/an.” Use the article
“a” before a word beginning with a consonant. Use “an” before a word beginning with a vowel.

Example: I want an apple. (I do not see an apple. But I feel hungry for one.)

Example: I want the apple. (I am choosing between the apple and the orange that I see before me.)

Grammar: Verbs- Past Tense


Verbs are words that tell about an action or a state of being.

Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark is written in the past tense. Action verbs that end with the
suffix -ed often tell about actions that have already happened, so they are verbs in the past tense.

Grammar: Contractions
Contractions combine a pronoun and verb to make a shorter word. Contractions also combine a verb
with the word “not”. For example, are + not = aren’t, must + not = mustn’t, would+not=
wouldn’t.

Figurative language helps readers get a better pictures of the story in their mind. Similes and metaphors
are examples of figurative language.

Grammar: Verbs- Present Tense

In the present tense, the verb describes actions that are currently happening right now or regularly. Only
the third-person singular (he, she, it) requires adding an -s (or -es) ending. Study examples of the
present tense:

Comparatives Superlatives
