rationale for the lesson
This lesson plan is the final lesson plan of the “Cultures Around the World: Teaching through
food” segment. After students learn about their differences and similarities, they will become
comfortable with exploring and learning about different types of food. At this time, students will
have been able to connect with the concept of diversity, and will be open to creating food
through math.
Students will be able to learn how to properly follow measurements for a recipe. This is
important because cooking activities promote a fun foundation for math. Additionally, students
will be able to get acquainted with real world problems and they will create their own solutions.

Students will be able to demonstrate that they can compare and describe measurable attributes
of a recipe.
At the beginning of the lesson, the educator will remind students of what they have learned so
far about foods around the world. The educator will then ask students about their favorite parts
of the previous lessons. Students will respond to this question and share out in class. Educator
will then ask, “What is your favorite snack?” Students will respond. The following guided
questions would be, “would you like to create your own snack?” Students will respond excitedly.
Teacher will then inform the students that they will create their own treats on that day. The

educator will state it is their favorite snack and will show the students how to create it.
Instruction/Mini Lesson (Outline the procedures or sequence activities that will make up this
learning experience; for instance, you might follow a routine wherein you model (I try); and ask
for active involvement (we try) during a whole group session.
As a whole class, the educator and students will go over the recipe, vocabulary, and demo
together.
Afterwards,, a student will collect a piece of paper with a “How to” outline of the no bake
sunbutter treats with pictures on the table. Then, the educator will place a box with the labeled
and pictured materials on the group tables. Every child will put on their aprons/smocks. The
students are allowed to use the materials as they wish.
In the middle of the lesson the educator will offer guidance for students who ask for help, or may
seem as though they need help. Students will be in charge of their recipes and will be asked to
use the words they have learned to communicate with each other during this lesson.
Independent Practice (during small group activity, working with partners, or independently)
Towards the end of the lesson, students will be able to eat their creations, while music plays and
educator and students alike affirm how wonderful and tasty the treats they made are.

If a student says they do not like it, that is ok. Remind your students to “not yuck anyone’s yum.”
At the very end, the educator will make sure that students clean up their spaces by using the “I
do, you do, we do” model.
