CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
A. Background

Self-introduction is a social skill that has been important for human communication for
centuries. It is a way to introduce oneself to others and share important information about
oneself. The concept of self-introduction has evolved over time, as social norms and
communication styles have changed.

In ancient societies, self-introduction was often reserved for formal occasions, such as
important ceremonies or events. It was a way for people to show respect and establish their
social status. In some cultures, self-introduction was also seen as a way to establish one's
credibility or authority, especially in academic or professional settings.

However, as societies became more modern and diverse, self-introduction became more
common in everyday situations. With the rise of technology and social media, self-
introduction has become a critical skill for networking, job interviews, and building
relationships with others. In these contexts, a well-crafted self-introduction can make a
significant impact, creating a positive first impression and helping to establish a connection
with others.

In today's society, self-introduction has become a ubiquitous social norm, and people
are expected to be able to introduce themselves effectively in various situations. Therefore,
it is essential to understand the importance of self-introduction and to develop the necessary
skills to introduce oneself effectively. With the right approach and preparation, a well-
crafted self-introduction can help individuals achieve their personal and professional goals.

A. Self Introduction

Self-introduction is simply the act of introducing yourself to someone. Self-

introduction helps other people to know about your identity, personality, and other essential
things related to you. A good self-introduction should cover all aspects of the person as it
creates a positive impression on others to have better connections in the future.1
1) Formal Introduction
Formal Introduction is used when you introduce yourself in a conference, formal
meeting or to someone older or higher position than you.
Exemple.

- Let me introduce myself
- May/can I introduce myself? I am Philipus
- My Name is Lawrance.
- I am Zaimah/My name is Zaimah.

- Hi Philipus.
- Hi/Hello Zaimah. I am Wisnu
- How do you too? I am Alfredo

2) Informal Introduction
Informal introduction is used when you introduce yourself to someone who has
the same age with you.
Exemple.
- Hi. I am Theresya. Nice to meet you

Spelling name is a technique for verbally mentioning the spelling of someone's name
using the alphabet or the alphabet. This technique is important to avoid mistakes in writing
a person's name or to ensure that the person saying the name understands it correctly.
spelling name involves pronouncing each letter in the name separately, followed by
pronouncing the name from start to finish. For example, if someone's name is "Dina", then
the spelling of that name would be pronounced as "D-I-N-A, Dina".

Use of spelling of names because Children learning to spell in English have more
difficulty with vowels than consonants because the relationship between sound and spelling
is more complex for vowels.2
Alphabet

Spelling name is an important technique for ensuring that a person's name is

pronounced and written correctly. By using this technique, we can minimize errors in
spelling and pronunciation of names and ensure that the person we are talking to
understands the name correctly.

C. Introduce My Self To My Friend

Introduce my self is the process of introducing oneself to others. The goal is to provide
important information about yourself, such as your name, background, hobbies, interests,
and experiences. A good self-introduction can help create a positive first impression and
open up opportunities to broaden social networks and build friendships.

To introduce yourself in elementary school, there are several things that can be said,
depending on the context and purpose. Some examples of good and interesting self-
introductions include mentioning your name, age, level at school, where you live, hobbies,
and more. In English, examples of self-introduction sentences at school include mentioning
full name, nickname, age, level at school, and others. It is important to pay attention to
ways of delivery that are clear, polite, and easily understood by classmates and teachers.
Self-introduction consists of several important components, such as:

- Name: Name is the most basic information in self-introduction.

2
Applied Psycholinguistics 22:4 557 Treiman et al.: Children’s own names
- Background: This includes information about place of birth, school, and current job or
profession.
- Hobbies and Interests: This includes things that individuals like and enjoy, such as
sports, music or the arts.
- Experience: This includes experience that the individual has, such as experience
working or attending a special event.
Example:

Hello, Friends! I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Arini Setiawati and
people call me Rini. I am ten years old and I was born in Surakarta, August 10th, 2010. I
live with my parents and grandparents in Mojosongo, Surakarta. I like to write stories when
I have free time. That’s why I love language subjects such as Bahasa Indonesia and English.
If you have the same hobby with me, I think we can be good friends. That’s all from me.
Thank you for your attention.
D. Introduce My Friend

Introducing means introducing, what is meant by introducing here is introducing

oneself to someone, but in this chapter we will discuss about introducing someone to other
people, or what is called introducing other people. Usually this introduction is done when
we are in an environment that we have not known before.
For example, when you are at a new school or a new neighbor, or a new workplace. In
that situation, of course, we have to socialize with other people around us who we didn't
know before. Of course, in opening a relationship or relationships with other people we
don't know, we have to introduce ourselves and the people we want to introduce first so
that the communication process can be intertwined with each other and of course we can
get to know new people around us. In this chapter we will learn how to introduce someone
to another person in English, not much different from Indonesian, it's just that in English
there are some such as proper use of words and also the correct arrangement of words when
conveying it.
In practicing introducing others there are two ways that we can use the first in a formal
way, then the second in an informal way.
 Formal is a more polite way and usually this way is addressed when we say it to someone
who is older than us or when we are in a situation that stresses us to be formal for
example, during office meetings, officials or other formal ways. For example:
- This is my friend.....
- Let me introduce you to....
- I would like to introduce you to....
- I just wanted to introduce......-
 Informal is the other way around, if formal may have to use polite words, then this
informal way allows us to use words that are a little more relaxed, not impolite.
However, even if we use sentences that are not very polite, they are still called informal.
For example:
- Have you met...?
- I dont believe you know
- You already know...right?
- I dont believe you meet...
- There is some one i’d like you to meet
In the form of general sentences that are always used repeatedly in introducing other.
Examples :
 First of all I would like to introduce you to our classmates
 Allaw me to introduce my brother
 Excume her name is Rona
 Hallo she is anita my sister
 Hello july let me to introduce my friend to you.
 Andri let my father know about you!
The difference between introducing other and introducing oneself is not that much, it's
just that introducing other is done by someone who wants to introduce someone to
someone else. Meanwhile, introducing oneself is introducing oneself to everyone without
having to be assisted by another person.
Example Dialogue
Here are some examples of dialogue:
Dialog 1:
Rio : good morning, Rahel.
Rahel : good morning, Rio.
Rio : Rahel, I would like to introduce you to my nieee, kharisma. Kharisma this Rahel.
Kharisma: hy, Rahel, nice to meet you.
Rahel : hy, kharisma nice to meet you too.
Dialog 2:
Bima : hey, fuji, this my friends who has been told by me, yola. Yola this is fuji.
Fuji : good morning yola nice to see you.
Bima : good morning fuji nice to see you.
CHAPTER 3
CONCLUSION

Self-introduction is an important process in introducing oneself to others. The goal of self-

introduction is to build rapport and create a positive first impression when meeting new people.
To make a good self-introduction, one needs to pay attention to important components such as
name, background, hobbies and interests, and experience. In addition, one also needs to pay
attention to the situation and the existing audience and use language that is easy to understand.
