What is (a) the average speed of the taxi, (b) the magnitude of average
velocity ? Are the two equal ?
14 A 1 kg block situated on a rough incline is connected to a spring of spring
constant 100 N m–1 as shown in Fig.. The block is released from rest with the
spring in the unstretched position. The block moves 10 cm down the incline
before coming to rest. Find the coefficient of friction between the block and
the incline. Assume that the spring has a negligible mass and the pulley is
frictionless. Given tan370 = 0.75

15 A particle having initial velocity u moves with a constant acceleration a for a


time t. Find the displacement of the particle in the last 1 second and evaluate
it for u=5m/s, a=2m/s2 and t=10s.
16 Both the springs shown in figure are unstretched. If the block is displaced by
a distance x and released, what will be the initial acceleration?

17 A body of mass 0.5 kg travels in a straight line with velocity v =a x3/2 where a
= 5 m–1/2 s–1. What is the work done by the net force during its displacement
from x = 0 to x = 2m?
18 A block of mass m is placed on a smooth wedge of inclination y. The whole
system is accelerated horizontally so that the block does not slip on the
wedge. The force exerted by the wedge on the block has a magnitude of ?

SECTION C 3M x 8 = 24 Marks
19 The length, breadth and thickness of a rectangular sheet of metal are 4.234
m, 1.005 m, and 2.01 cm respectively. Give the area and volume of the sheet
to correct significant figures.
20 The coefficient of static friction between the two blocks shown in figure is ‘u’
and the table is smooth. What maximum horizontal force F can be applied to
the block of mass M so that the blocks move together ?

21 A car moving along a straight highway with speed of 126 km h–1 is brought to
a stop within a distance of 200 m. What is the retardation of the car (assumed
uniform), and how long does it take for the car to stop ?

22 Figure gives the x-t plot of a particle in one-dimensional motion. Three
different equal intervals of time are shown. In which interval is the average
speed greatest, and in which is it the least ? Give the sign of average velocity
for each interval.

23 On an open ground, a motorist follows a track that turns to his left by an angle
of 600 after every 500 m. Starting from a given turn, specify the displacement
of the motorist at the third, sixth and eighth turn. Compare the magnitude of
the displacement with the total path length covered by the motorist in each
case.
24 A cyclist is riding with a speed of 27 km/h. As he approaches a circular turn on
the road of radius 80 m, he applies brakes and reduces his speed at the
constant rate of 0.50 m/s every second. What is the magnitude and direction
of the net acceleration of the cyclist on the circular turn ?
25 Give the magnitude and direction of the net force acting on a stone of mass
0.1 kg,

A. just after it is dropped from the window of a stationary train,


B. just after it is dropped from the window of a train running at a
constant velocity of 36 km/h,

26 The driver of a three-wheeler moving with a speed of 36 km/h sees a child

time to save the child. What is the average retarding force on the vehicle ?
The mass of the three-wheeler is 400 kg and the mass of the driver is 65 kg.

30 The bob of a pendulum is released from a horizontal position. If the length of
the pendulum is 1.5 m, what is the speed with which the bob arrives at the
lowermost point, given that it dissipated 5% of its initial energy against air
resistance ?
