1.0 INTRODUCTION
This coating procedure shall describe methods of carrying out the task activities required
during the installations for Customer Connection Works.
This procedure shall be read in conjunction with other project documents and is subject to
review as the work progress and depending on the situation.
2.0 PURPOSE
This procedure describe the operation to be used for coating welded joints in the customer
connection works project.
4.1 PROCEDURES
4.2 SAFETY
Prior to commencing the pipes stringing activity, a detailed Job Hazard Analysis
will be carried out. After all known, suspected or potential hazards and risks have
been identified, the workforce shall be informed of the hazards and control
measures that must be in place to eliminate or control the hazards and potential
risks surrounding the pipes stringing activity. The JHA for his activity is attached
here as a part of the procedure.
All personnel involved in pipes stringing operations will have received Safety
induction. Trenching and the job-specific training required for the particular
operations in which they will participate.
All the work force shall wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
reference job specific JHA. All the work force shall comply with GNL Health,
Safety, and Environmental Requirements as per the HSE Plan.
5.0 Methodology.
Prepare the welded joint and exposed steel to be coated by power brushing and
ensure there is no residue or moisture.
Use a clean dry cloth to remove dust and remaining dirt on the surface.
Preheat the joint to the minimum of 70°C (158°F) -90°C (194°F) maximum using
propane torch. Preheating reduces installation time and ensure proper bonding.
Check the temperature with the infrared thermometer
Apply mixed epoxy primer
Visually check the surface and ensure all bare steel is covered by the epoxy primer.
Apply HSS on the joint. The sleeve should overlap in the 10 to 2 o’ clock position
and the overlap of the sleeve onto itself should be 50mm. the sleeve should be
wrapped around the joint leaving a gap of minimum 25mm between the bottom of the
pipe joint and the sleeve.
Gently heat the inside of the overlapping sleeve edge and press down onto the
opposite sleeve and with gloved hand
Heat the inside of the closure patch for some seconds (2sec). position it evenly over
the edge of the heat shrinkable sleeve. Press it down firmly.
Start heating the closure patch from one side and slowly move to the other side while
pressing down with a gloved hand to ensure good bonding and eliminate air
entrapment.
Begin heating at the center of the sleeve and heat circumferentially around the pipe
using a constant paintbrush motion. Continue heating towards one end of the sleeve,
followed by the other.
Possible air entrapment can be reduced to the maximum by pot rolling of the sleeve.
Immediately after the sleeve has been shrunk onto the joint area and while the sleeve
is still hot and soft, roll the entire sleeve with a roller. Start rolling from the weld bead
towards the sides forcing possible air enclosures out of the sleeve. Special attention
should be given to the longitudinal and circumferential weld bead, the transition of the
mill coating and the patch area. If necessary, area may be reheated to roll out air.
