 IELTS Speaking – Introduction:
► PART 1: General Questions
In part 1 of the Speaking test the examiner will E.g.:

 How to expand IELTS Speaking Part 1:


1. TALK ABOUT YOUR PAST
Structure: In the past, [past tense]. However, at the present, [answer the question.]
E.g.: Do you prefer to read books or watch TV?
Actually, when I was a kid, I enjoyed watching TV a lot. However, at the present, I
prefer reading books simply because it helps me widen my knowledge and improve my
reading skills.

2. AVOIDANCE (Not answering the question directly)


Structure: Avoiding phrase + answer to the question.
E.g.: Do you prefer to read books or watch TV?
Oh, I like them both so it's hard to choose only one. But if I had to choose one, I
would like to read books and the main reason for this is because I can learn more
from the books.

3. GIVE EXPLANATION
Structure: Answer + because/as/since
E.g.: Do you prefer to read books or watch TV?
I prefer reading books simply because it helps me widen my knowledge and improve my
reading skills. So that’s why I love reading books a lot.

4. GIVE EXAMPLE
Structure: Answer + For example/For instance
E.g.: Do you like to read books?
I really enjoy reading books. One of my favorite books is Harry Potter, which is
basically about a magical world.
