Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

What is a wireless local-area network (WLAN)
A wireless local-area network uses radio waves to connect devices such as laptops and mobile
phones to the Internet and to your business network and its applications. When you connect to a Wi-Fi
hotspot at a cafe, a hotel, an airport lounge, or another public place, you're connecting to that business's
wireless network.
What are the benefits of a wireless network?
Convenience. Access your network resources from any location within your wireless network's coverage
area or from any Wi-Fi hotspot.
Mobility. You're not tied to your desk, as you are with a wired connection. You and your employees can go
online in conference room meetings, for example.
Productivity. Wireless access to the Internet and to your company's key applications and resources helps
your staff get the job done and encourages collaboration.
Easy setup. You don't have to string cables, so installation can be quick and cost effective.
Expandability. You can easily expand wireless networks with existing equipment, whereas a wired network
might require additional wiring.
Security. Advances in wireless networks provide robust security protections.
Cost. Because wireless networks eliminate or reduce wiring expenses, they can cost less to operate than
wired networks.

Setting up a wireless network

Before you can set up your wireless network, here’s what you’ll need:

Broadband Internet connection and modem. A broadband Internet connection is a high-speed
Internet connection. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable are two of the most common broadband
connections. You can get a broadband connection by contacting an Internet service provider (ISP). Typically,
ISPs that provide DSL are telephone companies and ISPs that provide cable are cable TV companies. ISPs
frequently offer broadband modems. Some ISPs also offer combination modem/wireless routers. You can
also find these at computer or electronics stores, and online.
Wireless router. A router sends info between your network and the Internet. With a wireless router, you
can connect PCs to your network using radio signals instead of wires. There are several different kinds of
wireless network technologies, which include 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, and 802.11ac.
Wireless network adapter. A wireless network adapter is a device that connects your PC to a wireless
network. To connect your portable or desktop PC to your wireless network, the PC must have a wireless
network adapter. Most laptops and tablets—and some desktop PCs come with a wireless network adapter
already installed.

Before you get started

Check your Internet connection. If you don't have a good internet connection, the router setup
experience will be frustrating. The simplest method is to connect a computer to the modem or gateway device
supplied by your Internet service provider (ISP). If your computer detects an Internet connection, you're ready
to set up the router.
Gather documentation. Here's another "seems obvious" step—but one that will save you aggravation
when you're in the middle of setup. Keep an eye out for stickers or slips of paper that might include important
setup information, like the router's default username and password.
Check for an app. Many router manufacturers provide mobile apps or web dashboard that can be used
for both setup and management. With a smartphone app, you may not have to connect the router to a
computer to configure it. Check the documentation that came with your router to see if an app is available.
Install and extend antennas If the router has antennas and they're separate from the router box, you'll
need to install them. In addition, you should extend the antennas before beginning the setup process.
Router Configuration
*Please note that all routers are different and as such may require different configuration steps.
As a note, you will need a working ethernet port on your laptop/desktop to plug into, or have an ethernet
adaptor if you do not have a port on your device.
Step 1: Resetting
• Connect the power cord
• Unplug ALL Ethernet connections
Hold down the reset button for at least 15 seconds
Step 2: Cable Setup
Connect your computer (PC or MAC) to the WAN port, only
DO NOT connect the wall port to any port on the Router yet! DO NOT use the
LAN ports
Step 3: Accessing Router
➢ Open your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc) with the computer connected to
the Router.
➢ Enter the IP address found in your wireless settings (Settings>Wi-Fi>Hardware
Properties for Windows 10/ Network Preferences for Macs) into the Address Bar
of your browser. Most IP addresses start with 192.168. Push Enter.
➢ User name is often blank or "admin". Password is often blank, "admin", or
"password"
➢ Password is often blank, "admin", or "password"
➢ Click “OK”
Step 4: Default Screen
Step 5: Configure Wireless SSID
➢ Click “Wireless”
➢ Click “Basic Wireless Settings”
➢ Enter a desired name into the “Wireless Network Name (SSID)” field
➢ Write down your Wireless Network SSID, it will be used for later. Do not share your
SSID or password with anyone unless you trust them. Users can piggyback on
your credentials and crowd your network.
➢ Click “Save Settings”
Step 6: Configure Wireless with WPA Security Key
You must secure your wireless network, failure to do so may result in disconnection.
Your Security Mode should be using WPA or WPA-2.
For WPA
➢ Click “Wireless”
➢ Click “Wireless Security”
➢ Select “WPA Pre-Shared Key” in the “Security Mode” field
➢ Set the "WPA algorithm" to "AES"
➢ (if available) otherwise, use "TKIP"
➢ Type in your WPA Shared Key. It should be between 8 and 32 characters- the
longer the better. Make sure it is something you can remember but that is hard to
guess. You may want to write it down, temporarily, so that you can remember it
for when you configure your computer to connect to the now-secure access point.
➢ Click “Save Settings”

Other things to consider before configuring a router.

Decide where to place the router. The best place for a wireless business router is in an open
area of the workplace, as you'll benefit from even coverage.
Check the router's LED lights. Your router's LED lights tell you if you've successfully made an active
Internet connection. If you don't see lights confirming such a connection, make sure you've plugged the cable
into the correct port.
Test the connection with a device. Confirm that your router has a working connection by plugging a
laptop computer into one of the device ports on the back of the router. If all goes well, you should be able to
begin a wired connection, just as you did when confirming an active Internet connection.
Use app or web dashboard. The easiest way to continue with router setup is to use a mobile app if the
router maker provided one. If there is no app, or you'd rather use the router's web-based dashboard, connect
the router to a computer via an Ethernet cable.
You might find the router's IP address printed on the back of device itself; if not, type 192.168.1.1, a common
router address, into the browser search bar.
Update the router's firmware. Your router may need an update of the "firmware," or software that
operates it. Update it as soon as possible, since the new firmware might fix bugs or offer new security
protections.
Use auto-configuration tools where possible. If your router is equipped with auto-install features, rely
on them to help complete setup. For example, you should be able to use auto-configuration to manage IP
addresses with the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), which automatically assigns IP addresses
to devices. You can always change these addresses later

Let’s Apply
True or False: Write T if the statement is correct and F it is incorrect. Write your
answer on the separate sheet of paper.
