Social media managed to bring people from all over the world to one place.
Diverse cultures, various physical attributes, and different views on beauty
standards. With that many people using the same platform, you will find yourself
constantly comparing body types, face shapes, and overall physical
characteristics. This births insecurities.
Influencers and famous people on social networks such as Instagram set
high and unachievable standards. You find yourself striving to achieve these
superficial standards with no luck, resulting in insecurities and self-doubt.

V. Conclusion
Restate thesis 3 points
Insecurities, habits that cause physical and mental health, and cyberbullying are
all factors that contribute to the damage of interpersonal relationships because of
social media.
Not only has social media changed the way we associate with one another,
but also the way we think.
While social media has its good side, its bad side can get very ugly;
especially when it leads to the passing away of a vulnerable soul.
How Have Interpersonal Relationships Been Affected by Social Media, for Better
or for Worse?
A large majority of people throughout the world own a smartphone and
access social media on a daily basis. Consequently, it is extremely interesting to
observe how interpersonal relationships have been affected in the digital age.
Multiple studies have found a strong link between increased use of social media
and a higher risk for depression and loneliness, which are factors that
greatly affect personal relationships. In fact, it is said that Facebook enrollment
was associated with a 4.32% increase in divorce rates. Social media has led to
the destruction of interpersonal relationships because it has birthed insecurities,
generated a pattern of unhealthy habits, and invited cyberbullying.
Social media managed to bring people together from all over the world,
each with diverse cultures, various physical attributes, and different views on
beauty standards. With that many people using the same platform, you will find
yourself constantly comparing body types, face shapes, and overall physical
characteristics. This births insecurity. Instagram, one of the biggest social media
platforms, displays a massive number of worldwide models and celebrities.
While they set such lofty standards regarding skincare, haircare, and body
measurements, striving to achieve these superficial standards with no luck
results in insecurities and self-doubt. Even in intimate relationships, seeing
one’s significant other interacting with someone else’s post can deflate one’s
self-esteem and spark jealousy. The lack of confidence and increased insecurity
because of social media ruins relationships.
Adding to the buildup of insecurities and self-doubt, the development of
unhealthy habits because of social media is another factor contributing to the
destruction of interpersonal relationships. Social media provides a “security
blanket” for some individuals where they feel safe because no real human
interaction is involved. This results in the unhealthy habit of isolation and leads
to several health-related problems, like mental distress. Additionally, bad habits
like checking your phone when you first wake up and the last thing before you
sleep are signs of social media addiction. Opening the internet at every
opportunity can lead to you never really switching off or taking time to relax,
which leads to mental exhaustion and physical health problems. Hence, if you’re
not mentally or physically healthy, how do you expect to have healthy
relationships with others?
Another aspect of the digital world that goes hand in hand with mental
disturbance is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying includes sending, sharing, and posting
hateful, false, and threatening comments to a vulnerable person online. Victims
of this digital crime often find themselves in a war with their own personas,
leading to feelings of inadequacy and shame. The effects of cyberbullying can be
so detrimental to one’s mental health that it could lead to the end of
their life! The famous story of Michelle Carter and her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III,
is a prime example of cyberbullying and its effects. In this case, Michelle Carter,
who had been dating her boyfriend for around two years, cyberbullied him into
ending his life. While I could elaborate more on this case, the emphasis here is
that cyberbullying is a serious matter that ruins relationships and ends lives.
Social media changed the way we associate with one another and
affected our social relations for the worse. Insecurities, unhealthy habits, and
cyberbullying are all factors that contribute to the damage of interpersonal
relationships. In closure, while social media has its good side, its bad side can get
very ugly, especially when it leads to the passing away of a vulnerable soul.
