A CUSIP is a nine-character alphanumeric code that identifies a North American financial security. CUSIP is an abbreviation and stands for Committee on
Combining data Uniform Security Identification Procedures. This is a committee of the American Bankers Association which was founded in July 1964. It developed the
CUSIP system. The CUSIP system is currently operated by S&P Capital IQ. The operating body, CUSIP Global Services (CGS), also serves as the national
Working with identifiers numbering agency for North America.

Name A full Cusip code consists of 9 digits. The first six characters are known as the base (or CUSIP-6), and identify the issuer (company). Example: Microsoft Inc
has the code “594918”. The seventh and eighth digit identify the exact issue or instrument. In the case of Microsoft that would be “594918 10 ”. The ninth digit
Ticker is an automatically generated checksum based on the first eight digits. The full code for Microsoft Inc is: ‘59491810 4 ’.

Sedol Many databases that have information on North America include CUSIP codes, but there are different versions. Some databases include only include issuer
level Cusip-6 codes. Other databases include the Cusip-8 digit or full cusip (Cusip-9). If you need to use the full cusip code for research and only have a list

of Cusip-8 codes, you can use the  Cusip tool to create a text file with the calculated Cusip-9 codes. The tool was created by Paul Barendregt using 
ISIN Python.

Event studies The database Datastream can work with CUSIP-9 digit codes only and these need to be slightly altered to be used: the character U needs to be added.
Example: the code “594918104” needs to be changed to “ U 594918104”. SDC Platinum databases can also use Cusip codes but these can only be
