Tests (Specimens) under Scope of NABL
Specimens for histopathology and cytopathology are collected by the surgeons at operation theater/out patient department
specimens are directly received in person or by mail at SNSC lab-Histopathology 3rd floor New Building
Proper labelling of the specimen (i.e. it should contain the following information)
• Tissue should be preserved immediately in the proper fixative as drying of the tissue causes artifacts.
• For routine surgical specimens 10% neutral buffered formalin is used, 70% alcohol for IOL’s,
• Approximate volume of the fixative required for different kinds of specimens are
a. Cornea - 5 to 10 ml
b. Eyeball - 150 to 200 ml
c. Exenterated specimen - 500 ml
d. Other biopsy material - according to the size of the specimen
MAILING OF SPECIMENS:
The specimen collected should be placed in suitable sized containers (preferably plastic container), with adequate fixative. The
container should bear the label with details like Name, Age/sex of the patient, specimen, etc. The lid of the container should be sealed
with help of adhesive tape to prevent leaking of the fixative.
The specimen should be mailed to Sri Nathella Sampathu Chetty Clinical Laboratory –Histopathology Laboratory,3rd Floor, New
Building, old no:18,New No:41,College Road, Nungambakkam,Chennai-600 006 with proper requisition from the surgeon providing
the required details mentioned above along with the address for communication. (E-mail/ telephone no. /Fax). The charges intimated
to be sent as Demand Draft payable to Medical Research Foundation.
Note: If the specimens are sent for both microbiological as well as histopathological investigation, the specimen would be received in
unfixed condition.
