    Here are two insights I gained from reviewing this document on families: 1. The family is the primary social unit where people first learn important lessons about their identity, communication, emotional expression, responsibilities and more. 2. There is no single definition or structure of a family. Families can take many forms, such as nuclear, extended, blended, single-parent etc. And roles within families may vary depending on the cultural context, but generally involve responsibilities for both male and female caregivers to provide for, nurture and teach their children.

    FAMILY: ITS DEFINITION

    FAMILY
    The family is an intimate domestic group
    made up of people related to one another by
    bonds of blood, sexual mating or legal ties. It
    is the smallest and most basic social unit,
    which is also the most important primary
    group found in any society.

    It is the simplest and most elementary group
    found in a society. It is a social group
    consisting of a father, mother and one or
    more children. It is the most immediate
    group a child is exposed to. In fact, it is the
    most enduring group, which has tremendous
    influence on the life of an individual, from
    birth until death. It also accounts for the most
    enduring social relation­ship found in society.
    Functions of a Family
    1. Identification function

    Within the family an individual discovers and


    establishes his own identity as a person and
    as a sexed being.
    He also learns what patterns of behavior
    relate to his identity.

    This function is related to the previous one


    and refers to the formative role of the family
    nucleus. It is in the family where the
    individual learns to talk, to walk and to
    behave, among other learnings.

    This function has a critical term to the first
    child of the individual. That moment is when
    they set the fundamental knowledge for their
    development in society. After that, education
    plays a reinforcing role in this learning
    process.

    The educative function is related to a
    communicative function, because it teaches
    the individual the signs, symbols and codes
    necessary to be understood in the society in
    which he lives.

    because it impacts on how the individual will
    relate to his or her peers.

    A shared responsibility between family and
    education.
    It relates to the ability to interact with others.
    It is a function that directly affects the
    survival of a system or social order, since it is
    transmitted from generation to generation.

    Family support is born of the members'


    sense of belonging. Knowing that they share
    beliefs, projects and affections makes them
    become involved and feel responsible for
    each other.

    The human being is nourished by that
    affection he receives in the family, he learns to
    feel it for others and to express it.
    The way in which emotions are expressed in
    the family affects the way in which people will
    manage their emotions in other environments:
    work, school, community, among others.

    Living as a family implies that its members
    must contribute to the productive forces of
    their society. It also implies that they must
    consume goods and services. In this way, the
    economic machinery of nations is kept active.
    It is also in the family where an individual
    learns how economic concept such as
    budget,savings, investments etc.

    Another of the basic functions of a family is to


    preserve the species by reproducing its
    members.
    May not be limited to biological reproduction
    but as well as in cultural reproduction

    must fulfill.
