What is Foundation ?
A structural component known as a
foundation offers assistance to the
superstructure under varying loads. It
serves as a connecting point
between the building and the soil
beneath, which will serve as its
ultimate support.
What is
Foundation Failure?
When the base that supports a
building or structure cannot handle
the weight and pressure applied to it,
it experiences foundation failure,
which can result in serious damage
or collapse.
Sai Building
Padre Rada Street, Manila City

Happened on July 23, 2004


The building was surrounded by construction work
all around it which caused its foundation to weaken.
It was found that due to the foundation failure
together with the influences of construction work all
around it, the soil structure underneath Sai had
changed. With this, the structure began to tilt 'till it
eventually collapsed.
Hotel Nevada
Baguio City
Happened on July 16, 1990

One of the deadliest earthquakes has been


experienced in Baguio City, with a
magnitude of 7.8, which destroyed
hundreds of infrastructures. One of them is
the Hotel Nevada, a 6-story hotel.

Due to the intense magnitude of the


earthquake, caused the collapse of the
building as its first-story foundation
weakened and soften.
Chuzon Supermarket
Poroc, Pampanga

Happened on April 22, 2019


As Pampanga experienced a 6.1 magnitude
earthquake, one of the infrastructures that
collapsed was the Chuzon Supermarket. It is
believed that the quake triggered the
building to collapse.
It was also found that the supermarket has
multiple structural and documentary defects,
which might also correlate to the intense
destruction of the building.
SM Jazz Mall
Makati City

Happened on April 30, 2020


Damages to the parking level's exterior wall
at Jazz Mall led to the outer slab collapsing
into the driveway.
Three cars were damaged by the tragedy,
and at least two persons were hurt.
A portion of a Bridge
Burgos, Pakil Laguna

Happened on January 09, 2019

A portion of a bridge under construction in


Pakil, Laguna, collapsed as it lacked
scaffolds and a support system, making its
foundation to weaken. Alongside, the project
is said to be already done yet due to bad
weather and lack of construction materials it
keeps on being delayed. Clearly, it placed
the blame on the contractor handling project
which was responsible for the foundation
failure and collapse of the project.
"The Suits" Building
BGC, Taguig City

Happened on February 04, 2015


The Suit is a 63-story residential tower and a
project of Ayala Premier. It was said that a
portion of a building under construction
collapsed while concrete was being poured
on the upper floors. Its lack of foundation
shows how the concrete caused the building
to collapse.
This caused the death of two construction
workers and at least 11 others hurt.
Warehouse
Guguinto, Bulacan

Happened on January 20, 2015


The occurrence of an earthquake
caused the wall of the warehouse to
collapse, as it only used substandard
construction materials and soft soil that
wasn’t able to make a foundation
ductile to disasters.
There were an estimated 12 people
killed and several others injured in the
incident.
A Three-story Building
Veronica St. in Binondo, Manila
Happened on April 10, 2019

It started with a sharp crack that


reverberated throughout the
decades-old abandoned part of a
three-story building. A moment after
the structures collapsed and there
were no found casualties.

It stated that the cause of the


collapse of the building was
structural deterioration.
Philam life Building
UN Avenue & Ma. Orosa St.,
Manila City

Happened on March 21, 2021


The demolition of the Philam life Building
caused the unstable position of the
demolished building, which triggered the
ground floor and basement foundations of
the building to collapse.
Due to the incident, two workers who were
trapped inside the building were retrieved
dead.

Marketing Building
Padada, Davao del Sur

Happened on December 15, 2019


Davao del Sur experienced above-Magnitude
6 quakes between October 16 and 31 which
triggered liquefaction in the area that soften
and weakened the building’s foundation which
caused the collapse of the building.
During the tragedy, there were at least 3
persons confirmed killed and at least six
persons were awaiting rescue as they were
trapped in one part of the collapsed building.
