1. A FOOTBALL MATCH I ATTENDED.
I have attended so many football matches in Rufaro Stadium but the one I witnessed on 15
July 2019 was an unforgettable one. Our school was playing against its chief rival Windview.
The weather was conducive for the big derby.
The referee blew her first whistle at 10 o’clock sharp. Spectators started cheering their
teams. For both teams the passes were good . In the sixteenth minute our chief striker
Nhamburo dribbled past the defenders and scored a brilliant goal. The noisy supporters
screamed with joy. Our rivals penetrated us through their left wing who threw in a good ball
and Gazza scored with a header. There was dancing and ululating from our opponents side.
The first half ended one all .
In the second half each team wanted to win. The passes were now fast and accurate. Our
opponent midfielder Jay Jay tried to shoot from a twenty metre drive but our goalkeeper
Linje made a great save. Nhamburo was a dribbling wizard. The last quarter was tough.
Spectators were now sitting on the edges of their chairs. Everyone was holding his or her
breathe because everyone thought it was going to end with a draw. Suddenly, Zuze tried to
shoot with a scissors kick but it hit the cross bar and it was cleared from the line. Our
supporters went wild. Just a minute before the final whistle Kundai was fouled in the penalty
box and a penalty was awarded. Tadiwa our sweeper scored the winning goal. It was a sigh of
relief for the Philas. Everyone screamed with joy.
Nhamburo was nominated the player of the tournament. We walked away with a full soccer
kit and a cheque of one thousand dollars.
2. AN ACCIDENT I WITNESSED
One Friday, it was a shiny and hot day. The sun was like a ball of fire. I decided to pay a visit
to an old friend who lives in Vainona suburbs. Whilst standing at the robots on Harare Drive,
I saw a speeding haulage trying to overtake a kombi at a sharp curve. The driver did not
notice that there was an oncoming bus. The lorry crashed into the bus. The bus driver and
three people died on the spot. There was total chaos, some people were screaming and
groaning in fear and pain as they were bleeding profusely. It was a fatal accident.
Some people were seriously injured and others fell heavily on the tarred road. The passing
vehicles stopped to avoid hitting the injured people. Within a short space of time, a police
patrol car came with its siren wailing and blue lights flashing, it screeched to a halt at the
scene. They put a cordon to keep the public at a distance since many people stopped by to
see if they could assist . Shortly after that an ambulance came and carried the injured people
to Hatcliffe Hospital .
Some survivors only suffered few scratches. The lorry driver who caused the accident was
drunk and did not follow traffic rules. He was tried and sentenced to eight months of
imprisonment. After a fortnight, all victims who were at the hospital were treated and
discharged.

3. THE DAY I WAS CAUGHT IN A THUNERSTORM
Last Saturday afternoon my mother sent me to buy some groceries at Mverechena shopping
centre. On my way back home I decided to pass through my friend’s home at another farm. It
was a hot-smelting day and the sky was as clear as water.
Towards three o’clock the wind sprang up. I could see the heavy blowing wind on the
swaying branches of trees. Thunder clouds began to gather in the sky. The storm was
brewing. Soon afterwards, I heard the rumbling of thunder and by this time the sky was
completely overcast. Suddenly , there was a loud thunderclap that left me almost deaf and it
was followed by a flash of lightning.
A few huge raindrops spattered in the dust. Almost immediately afterwards, heavy rain
started pouring. Water was everywhere. I had to scurry for shelter but I was already wet to
the skin. I took shelter in the farm shed. I shivered with cold. Within half an hour the storm
stopped , I could see a rainbow in the sky. Birds began to sing again, I then hurried back
home.
During the December school holiday my parents sent me to our rural home in Gokwe. I was
very excited because it was my first time to visit my grandparents.
One fine morning, grandfather asked me to accompany Tonde the herdboy to look after the
cattle. I have heard a lot of interesting stories from Tonde about his experience while herding
cattle. I was eager to go with him. We drove our cattle into a big forest which Tonde knew ,
it had green pastures and a variety of fruit trees. I saw some juicy ripe hute fruits. My mouth
watered . I quickly climbed up the tree, I stretched my hand to grab the nearest bunch of
fruits. I disturbed a wasp’s nest . They stung me on my face. I screamed with pain and fell to
the ground. Within a few minutes, my face was swollen. Tonde took me home and I was
rushed to the hospital.
Many people who are born in this country, hardly realise that our country has so many great
wonders. They take our country’s beauty for granted and seldom visit the main tourist spots.
Today , tourism is one of Zimbabwe’s greatest money earners.
On the eastern highlands, Nyangani mountain is the highest peak in Zimbabwe. This part of
our country offers breathtaking mountain scenery. Tourists go there for camping , trout
fishing and mountain climbing. There are also many types of animals and birds for the
enthusiastic photographer. Victoria Falls, of course, traditionally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya,
3
the smoke that thunders is on the western side of our country. Of interest to tourist is the
famous Crocodile Farm where thousands of crocodiles are bred and a game reserve
containing a wide range of animals and birds. Hwange National Park close by, it offers
hunting, game viewing and camping grounds.Great Zimbabwe is said to be the largest
complex of stone buildings in Africa south of Sahara. Built by the Shona people about eight
centuries ago with stones, of course with no cement and mortar. Great Zimbabwe has
impressed and puzzled every visitor who sets eyes on it. Similarly, the magnificent Matobo
Hills in Matebeleland. Tourists go there for camping, game viewing or exploring the superb
San paintings in the caves.
Lake Kariba , one of the largest man-made lakes in the world has numerous islands and is
surrounded by massive hills and forests. Water sport, fishing, camping, game viewing and
indoor entertainment are some of its popular tourist activities. Just north-east of Kariba is the
Mana Pools National Park. Here the winding Zambezi river has left ‘pools’ of water in its old
valley. It offers camping, game and bird viewing. Not also forgetting the famous Chinhoyi
Caves located 8 kilometres north of Chinhoyi town. There is a large pool of crystal clear
water over 100m deep popularly known as Chirorodziva and numerous caves.
Surely Zimbabwe is a blessed country and we must thank the Almighty for giving us milk
and honey in our motherland.

Dear Sir/Madam.
4
I am writing as the student librarian at Philadelphia Junior School. Our school recently
opened a school library. Our problem now is that we do not have enough reading books for
the library. We have tried to make students bring books used by their parents ,brothers and
sisters from their school days. However, most of the books are outdated and torn or
unsuitable for the new curriculum.
We are kindly requesting your company to donate any books that you may think maybe
useful to students in any grade level especially in line with the new curriculum. These may be
novels, sunrise readers ,textbooks or magazines.
Yours Sincerely
Rutendo Buzuzi.
It was one of those bright crisp winter days with a friendly sun neither too hot nor too cold.
The children were out and about enjoying the lovely weather. They were looking good,
dressed in their sports attires. The competitors sat in the middle of the ground, waiting go be
vetted. The other children were standing in groups just talking to their friends predicting who
the winner would be.
At around mid-morning one of the sports directors blew his whistle to signal the start of the
day’s activities and all the children gathered in the shade of a big Marula tree. There, the
sports organisers informed all the competitors to go to their respective disciplines. Some
athletes were to compete in the field events and others in track events. There was a boy called
Calaz from our school competing in the one hundred meter race . As the gun went off he
immediately went ahead of everyone and reached the finishing line first. The spectators who
were in the terraces were chanting slogans of victory in support of their teams. At the end our
team had the most gold medals.
8. THE DROUGHT
INTRODUCTION
There had been no rains for several months and the earth was hot and dry. Whenever the
wind blew, it whipped up a layer of soil and blew it away in the dust. The precious soil, in
which the crops grew was lost. It was in........................................................................
9. LETTER OF COMPLAINT
Hse no 5089
5
Mhungu Street
Hatcliff
Harare
29 September 2020.
Harare.
Dear Sir/Madam
During the last three months rubbish bins from Hatcliffe Extension have not been collected.
Most of them are now overloading, littering the streets. There is a bad odour coming from the
bins. Flies are all over. This puts residents at the risk of contracting diseases such as cholera,
diarrhoea and typhoid. Also, the streets are becoming more dangerous because of stray dogs
that are fighting for the bins.
I am kindly asking you to send the refuse collection trucks to our area urgently before our
location is struck by diseases.
Yours Sincerely
Margret Jambo.
The tree is a perennial plant with a thick, long stem or trunk that holds the branches and
leaves off the ground. Some trees are ever-green. They have leaves that remain green
throughout the year. Others are deciduous. They shed or lose their leaves and grow new ones
every year.
Below the ground , the roots of the tree grow and spread widely. The roots anchor the tree in
the soil so that the tree does not fall even during strong winds. The roots also bind the soil
together so that it is not eroded by water or wind. Trees play a very significant role in the
lives of people and animals. They make the countryside look beautiful. Trees also provide
shade and shelter to people and animals. Tree leaves are food to domestic animals like cattle,
goats and sheep as well as wild animals like elephants , buffaloes and giraffes. Oxygen, the
air we breathe is made in the leaves of the trees. The trees also help to prevent or reduce soil
6
erosion. Their roots bind the soil, thus preventing the washing away of the soil by water or
wind.
Today forests are shrinking as trees are cut down for firewood, making way for farm lands,
roads or for people settlements. In some cases the trees are destroyed by veld fires. That is
why it is necessary for people to grow trees in order to replace those that are destroyed.
The president explains the country’s developments, achievements and improvements both
current and of the previous year. In between the speech, the president chants some slogans of
encouragement and the people respond in agreement. A slogan is a short statement or phrase
in support of something. The slogans chanted are usually short statements of commitment to
hard work, unity and loyalty to the country.

Dear Chris
I hope you are enjoying the new school with your friend Nyasha. I am writing to inform you
of the terrible messy our school is in right now. As I write to you, our class is having lessons
under a tree. Our school buildings were badly damaged by a rainstorm.
The problem started last Monday when it rained all day and all night. It rained all day again
the next day. We could not go to school on these two days.
When we finally went to school on Wednesday morning, we received the shock of our lives.
The roofs had been ripped off and blown away by the storm. Some walls had fallen down and
are now a heap of broken bricks. Inside the classroom, we can stand ankle deep in water. All
our books were damaged.
The situation is quite bad at the moment and we hope that it will be solved soon. The
headmaster has actually been appealing to donors for assistance.
7
I really missed the good times we had at the school.

MY FAVOURITE ANIMAL
The Lion
The lion is probably the best known member of the cat family. They are usually tawny
yellow, the males carrying a mane of thick hair around the neck. Females are usually lighter
in colour than the males. The tail has a tuft and the cubs have spots.
The total length of a lion may be up to three metres of which a third is the tail. The shoulder
height is over a metre and a fully grown lion will have a mass of approximately two hundred
and fifty kilograms. The lioness is smaller in all respect.
Lions prefer to live in open country with scattered trees and bushes. They are sociable
animals living in groups. The pride consists of one or more mature lions and a number of
lionesses with their cubs. Animals in a pride co-operate in hunting, particularly when stalking
or ambushing their prey. For example, the hunters in the pride organise themselves in groups,
each of which will follow the prey until they are all in the best position to ambush or attack.
The lion hunts in silence and it is the lioness that most often kills the prey. The usual method
of killing is to leap at the victim and break the neck with the front paws. For larger animals
such as hippopotamuses, the lion will rip open the flesh in a running battle until the creature
is exhausted.
MY SCHOOL
Philadelphia Junior School is situated in Borrowdale Low Density Suburb. It is a school of
class and once there you feel at home. The school shares its name with a High Density
Suburb east of the school. The school is surrounded by a huge durawall with a magnificent
main gate. It is very beautiful and is like heaven on earth. The buildings are painted dark grey
with a blue roof. The classrooms are spacious, tiled and well furnished. The buildings are
surrounded by beautiful flowers such as petunias, marigolds and roses.
The school garden is very big and a variety of vegetables such as rape, cabbage, covo,
tomatoes, peas, beans and onions are grown there. Many fruits are also grown in an orchard.
School children are often given these fruits to eat at break time. Vegetables from our school
garden are used to make relish for our hot meals and surplus is sold to the community. All
classes take turns to weed and water the crops and trees.
8
The icebreaker here is that the school has introduced e-learning. Children learn to be
computer literate in the magnificent laboratory. Some children use computers and others use
tablets. The facilities are really modern and this makes my school a paradise.
