Additive Injection System Concept Native File

This document provides a concept note for an additive injection system for a fuel terminal in Ghana. It discusses injecting green and red dyes into gasoline pipelines to mark grades of fuel. The system will include offloading additive from drums into storage vessels, and injecting the additive into import pipelines using pumps. The pumps will inject 1.5 parts per million of dye at a flow rate of 1300 cubic meters per hour against a pipeline pressure of 3 barg. Additive will be stored in 500 liter vessels on skids at the terminal.

1. OBJECTIVE
Fuel dyes provide color to fuel, and could be identified visually. Fuel dyes can also be used as some fuel
markers, they must be of different color.
The followings are the objective for addition of dyes.
 Easily help to distinguish between grades of fuel
 Allows simple corporate identification
 Meet various national/regional specifications
 Support in the prevention of fuel theft
 Add to the aesthetic appeal of fuels

2. ADDITIVE DESCRIPTION
2.1 Green Dye (Gasoline marker)
Green dye shall be injected to gasoline receipt pipeline. Gasoline receipt pipeline shall be received with
flowrate of 1300 m3/h with pressure of 3 barg.

2.2 Red Dye (Gasoline marker)

Red dye shall be injected to gasoline receipt pipeline. Gasoline receipt pipeline shall be received with flowrate
of 1300 m3/h with pressure of 3 barg.

3. ADDITIVE SYSTEM
The additive system shall comprises mainly offload, storage and injection facility. The below is the brief
description about the additive facility.

3.1 Additive offload

Additive offload operation is a planned operation performed by operation team before start-up of gasoline
import operation. All additive offloads will be performed under the supervision of a operator and appropriate
checks performed on the additive delivery paperwork, Additive vessel inventory check and valve line up.
In order to add additional protection against cross contamination, offload connection points will be locked with
individual quick connect coupler. Additive will be offloaded from drum to vessel by hand pump.

3.2 Additive storage

Additive will be stored in above ground vertical vessel with dished end. Additive vessel will be designed as per
ASME section VIII dev.1. Vessel will be provided with level, pressure measurement devices. The offloading,
pump out connection will be provided.
.
3.3 Additive injection
Additive injection shall be carried out in import pipeline with the help of injection pumps. Each pump skid has
two positive displacement pumps operating on a duty standby setup with the duty pump changed at the end
of each pump operation. The pump skids will have a return line to vessel and a pressure sustaining valve to
ensure that the correct pressure is maintained on the skid outlet throughout the fluctuating injection demands
from the gantries. This is to ensure the additive has the correct differential pressure above the import line
pressure to ensure injection.

Pressure relief will be installed on the outlet of each pump to protect against dead heading the positive
displacement pumps and protection from thermal relief due to solar radiation.
Pump start /stop command will be given by field operator.
