Indie music originated from the word “independent music”, which doesn’t

rely on any official label or company management. This trend of music

gained its first popularity in both the United States and Britain in the 70’s

Indie music consists of many genre: pop, rock, R&B,….

Despite having close connection, indie music are usually the opposite of
what pop music is. Since its dawn, indie music has always revolved around
the DIY spirit, therefore being quite dinstictive from how universal pop
music is.
The independence of indie music draws the attention of unknown artists
and bands since they can do whatever they feel like wanted and freely
express their own styles without being framed by any boundaries created
by the label company.
Not relying on big label company means that these indie artists’ works will
be less popular than other songs. Their main ways of gaining fame comes
from music shows in bars, radios or even just people spreading word to
each other.

Indie music can easily get listeners hooked on with how it’s relatively close
to a normal person’s feeling like when talking to artists themselves. All of
that make indie music very enjoyable despite being quite picky in its
audience’s range
With the current popularity of the internet, indie artists can easily share
their works on free platforms in which the most popular ones are Spotify
and Soundcloud
Gotye is considered as one of the most sucessful indie artists in Western
countries with his one hit wonder “Somebody That I Used To Know”. During
his career, he gained many impressive achievements such as 8 continous
weeks on Billboard’s top, 6 millions physical copies and 7 milions digital
ones sold in the US and Britain.
Ngọt: a Vietnamese band with 4 members which are the main singer, lead
guitarist, bassist and drummer. They are founded in 2013 and the band’s
first shows usually take place in Hanoi’s bars. While the band initially gained
popularity for their unique syles, the first real hit of the band was “Em dạo
này”. Ngọt’s works doesn’t run after trends nor fit in any genre. They
always experiment with everything thus the songs made have a wide range
of topic from love to simple problems in our daily life. All of that creates a
very distinctive “sweet” taste of Ngọt.
Thái Đinh whose real name is Đinh Hồng Thái is among the first generations
of Vietnamese indie artists. His career is closely related to ballads like Phố
không em, Những ngày vắng em, Em còn dùng số này không?, Đi qua mùa
hạ... Thái Đinh’s works are inspired by stories taken from his own
experience in a familiar but strange society. When mentioned about Thái
Đinh, people often refer to soft and melodic songs that truly conquered the
heart of the audience.
