Bridge Alarms
On receipt of Equipment failure and associated alarm Master should be notified. A risk assessment
should be in place as appropriate to mitigate any risk thus exposed due to equipment failure.
The Alert and alarm settings mentioned below are minimum requirement. Master and Chief engineer
can supplement additional ship specific alarms or set more stringent alarm settings than required
below.
Off Course Alarm – to be set at 10° at Open sea & 5° at confined waters (where large
set is experienced due to cross currents the Alarm setting may be increased at the Masters
Discretion)
Pilot Power Failure
Gyro input failure
4) BNWAS
Alarms are acknowledged by OOW.
The settings are password protected or if provided with Key, it is in Masters custody.
5) Echo Sounder:
Depth Alarm. UKC Alarm should be set as per UKC policy in Navigation Handbook
(SP1915T) + additional safety margin as determined by the Master to provide adequate
warning to mariner for any route deviation. A standard set alarm range of 1.00M.
Recorder failure both digital and Paper.
6) Steering Gear:
Any alarm on alarm panel needs immediate attention including but not limited to below,
Power Failure
Motor Failure
Hydraulic tank High / Low Level alarm.
Any alarm effecting performance of steering gear.
7) ECDIS:
(During periods of extended channeling/pilotage whereby the Master designates the Chief Officer to the con of
the vessel, the Master need not be informed of anti-grounding alarms provided it has been ascertained that the
vessel remains in a safe position and the Chief Officer is not the sole watchkeeping Officer. If there is any doubt
the Master must be informed without hesitation.)
9) Radar:
When underway,
Combined CPA and TCPA of 1.0 NM and 12 mins or higher as required in master’s
Standing orders
When unable to comply with Masters night order instruction for CPA/TCPA.
More than 4 opposing targets on either side within 3 NM radius
When at anchorage
Where the CPA / TCPA set as per Anchor Watch Record (FM0185T) indicates
close quarter situation or risk of collision.
Vessel out swinging circle as determined by reference points mentioned in Anchor
Watch Record (FM0185T).
Malfunction of Equipment or Performance standard below maker’s recommendation.
Upon receiving SART signal.
If Radar input feed is lost Position / Heading / Log & Speed.
ARPA Failure.
10) External Communication Equipment:
Equipment malfunction
Upon receiving distress Alert
Not receiving any messages on NAVTEX / SAT C
GMDSS equipment alarms.
11) G.P.S:
Loss of Position.
GPS changing frequently in DR mode.
Displays high Dilution of Precision.
12) Doppler Log Failure:
Any alarm condition effecting performance standards.
13) Navigation Light Failure.
Any failure of Navigational lights
Failure of alarm tests.
14) Fire Control Panel.
Any alarm on fire control panel including but not limited to sensor failure.
Cargo Control Room
On receipt of following alarm Chief Officer must be notified. A ship specific alarm guidance to be
provided in Chief Officers standing orders.
1. Remote Gauging System:
Never be set below 98% of tank ullage.
Cargo Plan should have alarm set value for each tank which required to notify chief
officer.
At sea, alarm may be disabled provided daily check of ullages and alarm functions are
carried out.
Load port / discharge port specific alarm setting must be provided as per chief officer
night order instructions.
IG pressure sensor alarm setting is as per company guidance given in Inerting, Purging
and Gas-Freeing Operations (Tanker) (SP2239T).
2. Anemometer Repeater:
Two Alarm set value as per agreement during key meeting and SSSCL.
Chief officer must be available in CCR if wind speed approaches / gust up to alarm
value.
Master / Engine room must be notified.
3. IG Control Panel
High oxygen content setting as per regulation – 5% delivery.
Any alarm condition on IG alarm panel
Low pressure setting must be at 200mm of Wg.
4. Fixed / Portable / Personal Gas Measuring Instruments:
All gas alarm values should be set as per latest regulations TLV-TWA limits and should
never be altered.
Any alarm on personal gas meter while at use, the area must be vacated and PIC to be
informed.
5. Loadicator:
All alarm setting should be as per the original software program.
Any user setting alarm provided clear instructions should be provided by Chief
officer.
6. ODMCS: The equipment should be in idle mode when not in use.
When in use, all alarms are to be immediately attended to.
Any suspected malfunction, the equipment should be stopped and reasons fully
investigated.
Seek office guidance for any malfunction.
7. Hydraulic Pump:
High / Low Pressure, Pump Malfunction.
8. COP alarm:
High Temperature.
High Vibrations (COP / P/R Fan)
Engine Room Alarms
On receipt of following alarm Chief Engineer must be notified:
1. Complete or Partial blackout.
2. MSB Low/High Frequency Alarm.
3. MSB Low/High Voltage Alarm.
4. Preferential Trip.
5. Any Aux Engine alarm which can potentially lead to a blackout, or which manifest of condition
potentially dangerous for the engine and ship’s staff, such as, but not limited to:
Low oil pressure,
Exhaust gas temperature deviation
Exhaust gas temperature high
Overspeed
6. Aux Engine leak-off tank high level alarm.
7. ME Slowdown/Shutdown.
8. Any Main Engine alarm which can potentially lead to Slowdown/Shutdown or which manifest of
condition potentially dangerous for the engine and ship’s staff, such as, but not limited to:
Lube Oil low pressure alarm,
High Cooling water temperature,
Exhaust gas temperature deviation
Exhaust gas temperature high
Thrust Bearing temperature high
ME under piston spaces high temperature alarm.
Main Engine, Oil Mist detector alarm.
Overspeed.
AMOT Bearing Monitoring System alarm
9. ME FO leak-off tank high level alarm.
10. Any Bilges high level alarm due to leakages.
11. Any ER double bottom tank or HFO/MGO/LO/Sludge tank high level alarm.
12. HFO Settling / Service tank low level alarm.
13. Any fault alarm in fire control and detection system.
14. Stern tube tank high / low level alarm.
15. Stern Tube temperature high
16. Intermediate bearing temperature high
17. EGE gas outlet temperature high.
18. Aux. Boiler Low Water Level Shutdown
19. High Salinity Alarm
20. Any alarms in steering gear system.
21. 440V/220V/24V Low Insulation.
