Introduction and Background

In this group activity, the team would be working on HP as a product and would be exploring
ways in delivering great product to consumers. A number of questions were asked that helped in
providing a better understanding of the chosen the product. HP Corporation (also known as HP in
English) is an American Multinational Information Technology Company headquartered in Palo
Alto, California, United States. It develops personal computers, printers, and related supplies, as
well as 3D printing Solutions.

anticipated to reach USD 54.83 billion, representing a CAGR of 4.55 percent from 2021 to 2026.
People began stockpiling lockdown necessities when COVID-19 broke out, and this practice
helped the home printer market expand significantly during work-from-home scenarios. For
instance, Brother Industries Limited, which mostly serves the home market, had a spike in
demand and sales of its momo laser printers of 30% and its color laser printers of 42% from
April to June 2020.
The Global Printing Industry is experiencing a significant upsurge in emerging markets including
China, India, and the ASEAN region. Recent instances such as HP introduced the world's first
and most high-capacity HP Never stop Laser printers in the Indian market, featuring

Type of Process
Manufacturing process management refers to a combination of technologies and modus
operandi used to define how to manufacture a product or service. Operations classify processes
into types for manufacturing and services. Businesses chose the process design based on the
volume, variety, market demand, the state of raw materials, and availability of resources for
the product or service they offer. There are six general categories of manufacturing process
types: repetitive manufacturing, discrete manufacturing, job shop manufacturing, batch
production manufacturing, and continuous process manufacturing. In the 1980s, the sixth
process was made in the form of 3D printing because of the industry experts’ argument
regarding technological advancements (Bligh, 2020).
3D printing processes can produce 3D dimensional objects when layer by layer of materials are
deposited in line with the components of a 3D digital model. Many organizations in the
manufacturing industry like Ford and Boeing and Nike and Hersey’s are utilizing the 3D
manufacturing technique. Briefly put, the 3D printing process makes manufacturing possible in
many ways (Bligh, 2020).
The use of a digital manufacturing network directory is appropriate for HP, because it
accelerates the business's digital transformation, allows rapid innovation, faster time to market,
distributes manufacturing, and enables a leaner supply chain. HP personalization and 3D
printing can turn any large or small, simple or complex idea into a reality (HP, 2022)

Layout Type
Layout types are a means to describe where and how resources are arranged physically within a
process. These categories may depend on the quantity and nature of the goods and services
that an organization processes (James., 2011a).
The Group layout is used in our case study. This strategy combines the adaptability of the
process layout with the effectiveness of the product layout. This method can lessen work-in-
process and reduce process variability. It is also adaptable enough to take into account changes
in production volume and product design. In order to respond to the renewal of product
functionalities, the layout style is most suited for the company's various markets in North
America, Europe, and Asia.

Objectives:
● Transporting and handling of materials are efficiently reduced.
● By eliminating bottlenecks and congested areas, raw materials and semi-finished products can
move quickly from one workstation to the next.
● Workstations are well-designed and appropriate.
● Production and service centers are given the appropriate spaces.
● The workers made the fewest possible movements (James, 2011a).

The layout can be classified into the following four categories:

1. Process layout
2. Product layout
Process Selection & Product Design 8

3. Group layout (combination layout)

4. Fixed-position layout

Process layout:
1. It is often referred to as the functional layout.
2. Located here are similar equipment and services. For instance, all the lathes will be in one
location, all the milling machines in another location, and so on.
3. This style of structure is typically used in industries that produce goods in one-off, non-
repetitive jobs.
4. We favor this type of style when a variety of products are produced in small quantities.
5. Examples include a café or a company that manufactures furniture (James, 2011a).
Product layout:
• Another name for it is line (type) layout.
• The product will flow smoothly and logically.
• We prefer this configuration when the machines and ancillary services are positioned in
accordance with the processing order.
• It suggests that different raw material procedures are carried out sequentially, and the types of
equipment are positioned along the product flow line.
The product layout is chosen when a product may be manufactured on a separate production line
because of its high volume of production.
• This kind of arrangement is preferred for assembly line production or mass production.
Examples include the construction of computer keyboards and television sets (James, 2011a).

Group layout:
1. It combines the layouts for both processes and products.
2. In this kind of architecture, a collection of machinery or equipment is gathered in a sector
where each group is employed to carry out related tasks to create a family of components. Cells
contain these machines in various groups.
3. It reduces the total cost of equipment and transportation (James, 2011a).

Fixed position layout:

• The physical parameters of the product define the kind of machinery and personnel that are
brought to the product; this is known as a static product layout.
• This design is essential to the construction of large pressure vessels, aircraft, and ships.
• In a different sort of arrangement, the product travels past stationary production equipment, but
in this case, personnel and equipment are brought to the material at one location, and the product
is finished there (James, 2011a).

Facility Location
The location decision can be considered in terms of factors that vary in such a way as to
influence the cost as the location varies (supply-side factors) and factors that change in such a
way as to influence customer service as the location varies (demand-side factors). HP is
considered a service company; therefore, we will prioritize the demand-side factors. These
factors will include labor skills, especially customer convenience.

HP has a Global leadership position; we have our products in all continents. In each country, we
will concentrate on the populous cities, especially the ones with many skyscrapers. These
places have a large number of big companies, so the need to use smart printers like HP will be
very huge. We will also have some insurance stores in big cities, so our customers can be
supported as soon as possible.

Process Technology
Process technology is the application of technology to transform resources which can be in the
form of materials, information, or customers. Our HP products can apply the process
technology to both information and customers.
Regarding process technology for information, we have an enterprise system (ES) which can
concern with internal production, distribution, and financial process; marketing and sale
processes; supply chain; sourcing, purchasing, and the warehousing of goods and services.
Regarding process technology for customers. We will encourage the participation of customers
in the service delivery process. The customer can be enabled by technology to avail themselves
of the service at the time of their choosing and to make choices regarding that service (James,
2011).

Product / Service and Process Design

A product is a tangible good or thing that is physically made available to meet a need, while a
service is an intangible good that is equally aimed at meeting needs. They are offered by
businesses in order to make a profit. Product and service design are processes that involve
establishing opportunities and problems and creating practical and applicable solutions (Babich,
2018). Process design is a process that governs work activities that create value while
establishing and assigning responsibilities (Bodt, 2017).
HP’s supply chain enables the protection and empowerment of its employees, while
simultaneously reducing environmental effects and increasing value for customers. The most
relevant elements of the design process for HP Corporations are as follows:
1. Idea generation
2. Feasibility study
3. Preliminary Design
4. Final Design
A feasibility study is an important and one of the most pertinent factors to take into account in
the design process, taking into account the chosen product. A product is subjected to market,
economic, and technical examination as part of the feasibility study process to determine its
likelihood of success once it enters the market. This includes discussing the product's potential
to address problems with customers as you evaluate the design concept, comparing demand
projections to production and delivery costs, and making sure the product can be produced
technically. (James, 2011b)

Work and Job Design

A business that possesses “top tier” employees is bound to have the best customers (McCarthy,
2017). HP is one of the most tried and trusted printers globally. According to a computer world
Process Selection & Product Design 10

magazine article, HP employees are enthusiastic and well-compensated for their work.
Additionally, they are also provided with growth and promotion opportunities that advance them
in their careers. Increasing the manpower to support system automation will help HP reduce
operational costs and outperform its competitors.

The following elements are important to the design of the job and work:
1. Planning and Control considerations
2. Inventory management
3. Capacity management
4. Lean operations considerations
5. Agile Operations considerations

Conclusion
As a segment or Product of the HP brand, the hp + printer has a strong stand and hold in the
global market, because of some strategic attachment and updating printing technologies as well
as a global partnership with other companies (such as P & G and Microsoft). Hp Smart printer
has a big market share and has the potential to grow and expand in the future market by
developing and innovating printing technologies. The presence of the largest U.S. technology
company in terms of revenue that trying to keep its core personal computing business
profitable as competition from mobile devices erodes sales. HP is trying to transform itself into
a major enterprise computing provider while slashing expenses to boost the bottom line. The
analyst meeting “comes at a crucial point in the company’s struggle to maintain its relevancy in
an increasingly competitive IT industry,” said Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White, who
expects HP to offer a conservative outlook. (Gupta, 2012)
