Syllabus
Paper I -- Introduction to Counselling
(3 hours. 100 Marks)
1.1 Counselling – Definitions of counselling -- Need for counselling.
Difference between counselling, advice and guidance.
Goals of counselling: short term goals, long range goals, and the process goals.

1.2 Principles of counselling – Authenticity and congruence – Participation –Individualization --


Confidentiality, Communication, Acceptance, Self Confidence, Self-awareness and Being non-
judgmental.

1.3 Approaches to counselling: Directive counselling, Non–directive counselling and Eclectic


counselling.

1.4 Counsellor’s skills -- Pre helping phase – Stage-I skills -- Primary level accurate empathy,
Genuineness, Respect, Concreteness.
Stage-II skills - Advanced accurate empathy, self-disclosure, confrontation, immediacy, alternate frame
of reference.
Stage-III skills -- Identification of the problem, Goal setting, means, feedback and follow up.

1.5 Counselling Responses – EISPU - Evaluative – Interpretative - supportive- Probing and


Understanding responses.

1.6 Techniques of counselling -- CRAVE analysis and Force field analysis.

1.7 The following exercises will be given for experimental learning:

1.7.4 Relaxation techniques – Jacobson’s Relaxation Technique
1.7.5 Application of Crave Analysis and Force field Analysis

Paper -II –Psychotherapy and Behavior Modification for Counsellors.

(3 hours. 100 Marks)

2.1 Human behavior – basic concepts relating to an understanding of the human behavior.

2.2 Psychotherapy – Definition, objectives and scope of psychotherapy – The basic psychoanalytical
theories [Freud and Jung] -- Theories of Karen Horney, Harry Stack Sullivan, Alfred Adler, and Erik
H. Erikson.

2.3 Types of psychotherapy – Adlerian psychotherapy, Analytic [Analytical] psychotherapy [of Carl
Jung], Client-centered therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Gestalt therapy, Reality
therapy, Transactional Analysis.

2.4 Group therapy – The need for and the importance of group therapy – Types of groups -- Structured
groups

2.5 The dynamics of the group process - Theory of group interaction - how to use the interaction process
to make people change and have insight into their problems- The role of group therapies.

2.6 Behavioral therapy – learning theories – classical conditioning -- operant conditioning –social
learning theory – Behavioral analysis -- Behavioral modification techniques like desensitization,
reciprocal inhibition, stop thought, token economy scheme, and flooding.

Paper – III Practice of Counselling in Different Settings

(3 hours. 100 Marks)

3.1 MARITAL AND FAMILY THERAPY:

3.1.1 Family - Family as a system – the family life cycle – family tests.

3.1.2 Understanding the dysfunctional family – Dysfunctional family system -- Life cycle tasks of
the dysfunctional family system, Family myths.

3.1.3 The course of family treatment – Treatment stages, Special techniques, Family sculpture,
Network therapy, Gestalt therapy, Psychodrama, Videotape -- Working with poverty [poor families],
wealthy [families], and one-parent families – Family [counselling] and genetic counselling.

3.2 INDUSTRIAL COUNSELLING:

3.2.1 Goals of the industry -- Individual needs versus organizational needs -- organizational
perspectives in employee counselling.

3.2.2 Industrial counselling – need [for counselling] at the work place – Pre-requisites for employee
counselling -- Counselling related to chronic absenteeism, accidents, physical disabilities, indebtedness
-- Performance appraisal and counselling - Retirement counselling.

3.3 EDUCATIONAL COUNSELLING:

3.3.1 Scope and importance – psychological problems of children -- child guidance and counselling –
Vocational Guidance- Organization of guidance services – problem[s] of teachers and the need for
counselling.

3.4 CRISIS COUNSELLING

3.4.1 AIDS counselling - Suicidal Counselling - Grief Counselling - Counselling the handicapped.

Paper IV -- Drug Abuse Counselling
(3 hours. 100 Marks)

4.1 Drugs – Difference types of drugs – their composition -- Drug Abuse -- its effect on physical and mental
health of the individual.

4.2 Addiction – symptomatology of addiction, stages of addition- Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test
(MAST)

4.3 Denials - Concept and meaning – Different forms of denials.

4.4 Management of addicts – Medical Model / disease model -- Social Learning -- Deaddiction –withdrawal
symptoms – Re-educative therapy - Psychosocial management.

4.5 Recovery – phases in Recovery – factors that complicate recovery -- Role of parents and the community
in the recovery process.

4.6 Relapse Dynamics – Relapse Mechanism, Factors leading to relapse -- relapse prevention.

4.7 Social support system – Self-help groups like AA, Al-Anon, and Ala-Teen - Mobilizing the community
support.

4.8 Rehabilitation –Scope of rehabilitation -- physical and social rehabilitation – the short-stay homes –
involvement of the family and the community in the rehabilitation process.

4.9 Prevention – primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Role of different agencies – the laws related
to drugs.
