By holding one’s arm parallel to the ground, a similar model is created to the real scenario of
standing away from the tree. The distance from the tree to the person is analogous to the arm
length of the ruler holder. By measuring the height of the tree from the perspective of the ruler,
an approximation can be made to the height of the tree in reality.
Arm length was measured to be 58.5cm. The formula for finding the tree height is as follows:
Tree Height = Ruler length⁄Arm length X Distance from tree to person
40cm 9m 6m
18cm 6.5m 2m
18cm 8m 2.5m
Average tree height for Labrador Nature Reserve: 6.4m

Reflection
Our experience on the excursion was meaningful. It prompted me to ask questions pertaining to
the meaning of nature and man’s influence over it. I reckon that man must love nature, and
dwell alongside it, rather than treating nature as a tool to be used. Seeing how small oneself is
amongst the trees and greenery, I felt a sense of tranquility taking in what nature has given to
me. It made me reflect on the impact of global warming, and the evil that mankind wreaks unto
nature, pure and undefiled. Action must be taken to stop it at all costs.
